Can't get version 3.8.22 on Mac to sync with recently upgraded 5.1.2 on iPhone

Today I was able to transfer my passwords, notes, etc. on my iPhone from version 3 to version 5.1.2. I then deleted v3 on my iPhone so I only now have v5.1.2. I am trying to sync my 1Password (on my Mac) with my iPhone 1Password app but my Mac 1Password doesn't recognize my new software or something. I can see my iPhone under "Sync" on 1Password (on my Mac) but the actual "Sync" button is disabled. I'd like to sync via iCloud. Right now if, on my Mac, I go to 1Password > Preferences > General it shows my data file is on Dropbox.

  1. How can I get the info on my 1Password Mac to sync with my 1Password on my iPhone and
  2. How can I switch it to sync via iCloud or even wi-fi rather than DropBox?

Thanks,
Sasha

    1. In essence, you need to have the same sync method enabled on both your Mac and phone. There is a good knowledge base article here which guides you through set up of the various sync methods on your Mac.
    2. The linked knowledge base article should help you with that (there's a similar article for iOS devices here). However, please note that iCloud sync will be available only if you bought the Mac App Store version of 1P. It's not supported by the AgileBits store version following changes made by Apple on the release of OS X Yosemite.

Thanks, Stephen, however I need more specific help than just reading the info here: https://guides.agilebits.com/1password-mac/5/en/topic/sync-wi-fi

When I open my 1Password on my Mac (I purchased it directly from AgileBits several years ago) and go to "Preferences" there is no "Sync" tab like what is shown on the screenshot at the link above. In Preferences, I have General, Security, Browsers, Logins, Backup, Updates, Advanced.

Please keep in mind that I have succesfully been syncing my 1Password between my Mac and my iPhone for several years. I only started to have issues yesterday when I upgraded my 1Password app when prompted.

    Thanks,
    Sasha

Moreover, when I select "Wi-Fi Sync" on my 1Password app, it tells me to "select Window > Wi-Fi Sync or File > Wi-Fi Sync, respectively." However, when I open 1Password on my Mac, there are no Wi-Fi options under either Window or File.

Ah, I'm sorry: I don't think you can use wifi to sync between 1P version 3.8 on your Mac and 1P version 5.1.2 on your iPhone. I'm sorry I didn't properly register earlier that you're still using quite an old version of 1P on your Mac.

I believe (but am not absolutely sure) that you can use Dropbox to sync in your situation but I suspect that's the only way left (aside from upgrading to 1P4 for Mac, of course—which would allow you to use wifi sync again).

Edit: sorry, but I suspect you can't use Dropbox either! (I'm having trouble in remembering what works with these older versions of 1P.) Dropbox changed its API and 1P4 was released which took account of that and worked with the "new Dropbox" but I believe 3.8 ceased to work with Dropbox. Sorry to have been initially misleading!

  • Hi @Ehrich Weiss‌ ,

1Password 5 for Mac and iOS use a more reliable WiFi sync method so you can not sync 1Password 5 on iOS with 1Password 3 on Mac. To use WiFi sync, we recommend upgrading to 1Password 5 on your Mac.

Also, as @Stephen_C‌ said, Mac apps purchased outside of the Mac App Store can not use iCloud for sync. This is a restriction set by iCloud.

However, though it's not your preferred method, you can still use DropBox with 1Password 3 on your Mac. On the Mac, go into Preferences, choose General, and click the Use DropBox button.

Then, on the iOS 1Password, you should be able to setup Sync via DropBox.

If you need further assistance, please reply.

I'm using 1Password 5.1.2 that I purchased directly from AgileBits (not the App Store version). I could successfully sync via Wi-Fi w/ my 1Password on my Mac (OS Yosemite) but can no longer do that. When I go to to my 1Password app on my iPhone and then Settings > Sync > Start Syncing and choose "Wi-Fi Sync" it says "Open 1Password for Mac (which I did) and select Window > Wi-Fi Sync..." I've done all of this and it still won't let me sync over Wi-Fi. It was fine 2 days ago, when it last synced. Ugggg. It's frustrating and time-consuming to have to type all of this out and not get a "live" person over the phone.

The usual solutions to the sort of problem you have are:

    1. disable wifi sync on each device then re-enable it; and/or
    2. reboot each device.

I reboot my devices daily and very rarely need to do anything more to keep wifi sync working so it's probably worth trying that if you've not done so.

My problem is quite similar to the one discussed in this thread. I'm running 1P 3.8.22 on my Macbook, 1P 5.4.1 on my iPhone 6, running iOS 8.3 and OSX 10.8.5. I've spent hours trying to read topics here, help notes etc. I've tried using WiFi via my JetPack and WiFi using an adhoc network. I just cannot get the passwords in my Mac's vault to sync to 1P on the iPhone. I do not see any command's under File or under Window on the Mac's 1P that relate to syncing. Very very frustrated. This should be simple and not require hours of frustration!

    Hi @RV Gypsy ,

I sincerely apologize for the frustration you've been feeling here! Unfortunately, as is stated earlier in this thread, it is not possible to sync between 1Password 3 for Mac and 1Password 5 for iOS using Wi-Fi. Our developers completely re-wrote 1Password for version 4 (including Wi-Fi sync) and as such, the newer versions are not compatible with 1Password 3's version of Wi-Fi sync.

To keep 1Password 3 for Mac and 1Password 5 for iOS in sync, you'll want to look into Dropbox. There are instructions for how to get 1Password 3 for Mac set up with Dropbox here: set up Dropbox sync.

And our User Guide will tell you how to set up 1Password 5 for iOS: set up Dropbox sync.

I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you, but I hope this helps! If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask - we're here for you! ;)
