1Password data did not transfer when iPhone 6 restored from backup

I recently got a new iPhone and restored it from an iTunes backup. All of my data transferred over to my phone except for 1Password. I am panicking because I am worried I have lost all of my password data! Is there a way to get it back? I no longer have my old phone.

It may not be good news. See this comment from AgileBits about restoring from iTunes backups. I suppose you didn't previously sync your 1P data with a Mac or Windows machine?

I will ping @Drew_AG‌ to see if he can help you in any way because he's much better with the technical stuff than I am.

I just downloaded an app to view iTunes backups on my Mac so that I can see what data exists in prior iPhone backups. 1password is definitely in the backup and there are various files listed, including some in this format: Documents/Backups/1Password 2014-11-20 11_07_01 (1 profiles, 59 items, 8 folders, 0 attachments).1p4_zip. There are also other files in this format: Library/Saved Application State/com.agilebits.onepassword-ios.savedState/restorationInfo.plist.

I have no idea what it means, but could this contain the information I need?

OK. I have been able to download 1Password for my Mac and restored my password from the iTunes backup data on my computer. Yay! How do I now get this data on to my phone and synced with my computer?

Before you go any further would you please tell us:

    1. what version of 1P for Mac you are running;
    2. what version of 1P for iOS you have on your phone.

I'm assuming you've downloaded a trial version of 1P5 from the AgileBits site: is that correct?

Potentially, at least if you're using the right versions, you're going to be able to use either Dropbox to sync or local wifi. Do you have more than one 1P vault? (In other words, have you created any secondary vaults?) If so, you're going to have to use Dropbox to sync because wifi sync doesn't currently support sync of more than one 1P vault.

If you want to know more about sync of 1P data start here with this knowledge base article.

1P4 for Mac from AgileBits site (I am running OSX 10.8)
    1P 5.1.2 for iOS

    There is just one vault.

Can I sync using iCloud? After the initial sync, what is the best way to automatically sync between computer and phone?

    Can I sync using iCloud?

No—following changes made by Apple on the release of OS X Yosemite only the Mac App Store version of 1P now supports iCloud sync.

If you're using the 1P4/1P5 mix you describe you should be able to use either Dropbox or wifi to sync. I use wifi sync and it works perfectly for me. I'm using 1P5 for Mac and it's a little more seamless than using 1P4 for Mac with 1P5 for iOS, but it should still work for you.

After the initial sync, what is the best way to automatically sync between computer and phone?

I think the best possible advice is to stick with whatever works for you for the very first sync!

Many thanks! Just to clarify, the wifi sync is not automatic right? You have to manually do it each time?

As between 1P4 for Mac and 1P5 for iOS you can only sync when the Wi-Fi Sync window is open (although it's not a particularly onerous affair to do it). With 1P5 on both devices wifi sync simply happens when 1P is unlocked on both devices.

There's one other thing I ought to add. 1P4 for Mac wifi sync didn't support sync of any attachments to 1P items so you may find Dropbox better if you have attachments you need to sync.

Thanks for the assist, @Stephen_C!

@bernie9999, I'm so happy to hear you were able to restore your 1Password data to 1Password on your Mac!

Everything Stephen_C mentioned is correct, so hopefully that helps to decide if you want to use Dropbox or Wi-Fi sync. You can always switch the sync method later, if you want. Just to reiterate a couple things he mentioned: With your setup (1Password 4 for Mac and 1Password 5 for iOS), Wi-Fi sync won't support attachments, and won't work automatically. But Dropbox will support attachments and work automatically.

If you need any help to setup the sync between 1Password for Mac and iOS, just let us know! :)
