No Sync Option on Mac
I've upgraded to an iPhone 6 and now it doesn't sync to 1Password on my iMac. I've read up and have synced my iPhone to Dropbox. When I try to sync my iMac using Dropbox I can't as I don't have the "sync" option in 1Password preferences. I've read on your forum that this is because I downloaded 1password from the agilebits site and not from iTunes. So, what do I do now? How do I get the "sync" option in preferences?
Thanks.

The first thing to make clear is that 1P for Mac (which you get from the Mac App Store or direct from the AgileBits store) is separate product from 1P for iOS (which you get via the app store on your iPhone or iPad). You need to have both in order to sync 1P data between your Mac and your iOS devices.
Please tell us:
- what version of 1P you are using on your Mac, and the version number of OS X on your Mac;
- what version of 1P you are using on your iPhone (go to 1P > Settings and look towards the bottom of that screen for the version number);
- what version of iOS you are using (look under iOS Settings > About).

Hi Stephen,
Yes, I bought 1P on my iPhone a long time ago. I downloaded 1P onto my iMac after that. Maybe with 12-24 months but really can't remember. I have both.
- 1P running on my iMac is version 3.8.22 (build 32010) and iMac is running OS X version 10.9.5
- 1P running on my iPhone is version 5.1.2
- iPhone is running iOS version 8.1
Thanks,
Mark

I'm sorry for the confusion here. 1Password for Mac will sync with Dropbox no matter where you purchased the app from. As Stephen_C mentions above, knowing your version numbers will help us give you a bit more specific advice.
Here's what your sync pane should look like in 1Password 5:
Are you seeing something different?

Hi Megan,
Here is a screen shot of what I'm seeing. As you can see the "sync" option is missing. I've given the 1P version details, as requested, in my previous post above.
Thanks,Mark

My apologies! We must have posted at nearly the same time, I don't recall seeing the post with your version numbers there when I was composing my message to you.
In any case, those version numbers do clear things up a lot. 1Password 3's preference pane is a fair bit different than 1Password 4 and 1Password 5. Please check in the Preferences > General tab. You'll see the current file path of your 1Password data, including a 'move to Dropbox' button.
I can provide you some more detailed instructions for getting your data merged if you provide a bit more information:
- Is there any data on your iPhone that needs to be preserved, or is your most up-to-date data already stored in your Mac?
- Did you use the same Master Password when setting up 1Password on your iPhone as you did for 1Password for Mac?

Hi Megan,
There probably is data on the iPhone that isn't on the iMac and vice-versa but not much. Yes, I did use the same master password for both iPhone and iMac.
Thanks,Mark

If you have the same Master Password on both the iPhone and the iMac, we should be able to merge your data here with little trouble. (We'll make a few backups first, just to be sure we can roll back if necessary.)
Basically, before we switch your Mac keychain file into Dropbox, we will turn off Dropbox syncing on your iPhone, clear Dropbox of any keychain data, then let 1Password for Mac store your datafile in Dropbox, and merge that datafile with your existing iPhone data.
Here are the detailed steps:
On your Mac:
- in 1Password's Preferences > Backup, click the 'Backup Now' button
On your iPhone
- Go to 1Password's Settings > Advanced, tap on 'Create Backup'
- Go to Settings > Sync > Sync Service and select 'Disable Sync'
- Quit 1Password
On your Mac:
- Look in your Dropbox folder, and remove any 1Password.agilekeychain files you see there. (You can move these to your desktop if you don't want to immediately delete them.)
- In 1Password's Preferences > General, select the 'Move to Dropbox' option
- Allow Dropbox to fully sync
On your iPhone:
- Open 1Password
- Go to Settings > Sync, and enable Dropbox sync
- You will be presented with the available 1Password.agilekeychain files in Dropbox (there should only be the one.)
- When you select the keychain, you may see a merge warning (due to the data in the vaults not matching 100%) - select 'Merge anyway' and enter your Master Password when prompted.
This should get your iPhone and Mac all synced up. Please let me know if you hit any snags in the process - we're here to help!

Hi Megan,
I've followed your steps in order but when I get to the following step:
"In 1Password's Preferences > General, select the 'Move to Dropbox' option"
I get the message "Dropbox is not installed" but it is installed and working fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks,Mark

While 1Password 3 still does run in Yosemite you've stumbled upon one of the incompatibility issues. Since we last updated 1Password 3 Dropbox must have changed either or both the path and process name meaning we are successfully detecting it any more. It isn't a completely lost cause though as you can manually instruct 1Password 3 to move the 1Password.agilekeychain to Dropbox.
In the General tab of 1Password 3's preferences there is the Move to Dropbox... which you're already aware of. What you might not know though is if you right click on the path above it you will get a small menu with three options. The one that will interest you is the Move Data File to Another Folder.... You can use that to manually move the .agilekeychain into Dropbox and achieve the same goal.
Something to consider is you can use your licence key for 1Password 3 to obtain an upgrade price for 1Password 4/5 if you purchase 1Password directly from our store. If iCloud sync is important to you (I suspect not if you're running 1Password 3) you should be aware that iCloud support is sadly now limited to purchases made through Apple's stores, either their iTunes Store or Apple's Mac App Store (MAS).
Let us know if you have any problems or further questions.
