We still use license files, but we try as much as possible to avoid relying on emailing of a file as they often get removed from email by virus scanners. The activation link is a URL that has the contents of the license file encoded in it.

How would a person get the license file?

I am puzzled. I have been a long time customer through multiple versions of 1PW. I upgraded to V5 family plan and a couple of weeks ago, my 1PW would no longer allow additions and I see a Trial Version in the upper right hand corner. I finally got it to update on one computer, but how do I get it on my other 2 computers? There is no license code that I can find.

@DanH 1P5 from the AgileBits store is licensed by applying a licence file: see this knowledge base article. You can transfer the licence file from one computer to the other any way you like (USB stick, email, etc.). If you need another copy of the licence file go to this page and enter the email address you used when you bought 1P5.
You should not be receiving the "trial expired" message if you bought 1P from the Mac App Store so I'm assuming you did not do that. The Mac App Store version does not require a specific licence. When you refer to "V5 family plan" I'm assuming you bought from the AgileBits store—even though there is no longer such a thing as a family licence. (The licence now simply permits up to six family members in the same household to use 1P.)

My friend is out of town for a week. We'll try the link when they return, and I will come back here if we have trouble. Thanks. I want them have the file so they can store it as an attachment inside 1Password!
