"Vault already exists"

Bought a new iphone and restored phone via backup from iTunes.

Opened 1Password but did not see any of the passwords. Attempted to restore sync with dropbox and got the message "Vault Exists; This vault already exists on your iPhone." However, I do not see any of the passwords; vault info says "items:0". I am looking to recover this vault that by all appearances is still on my iPhone but won't display any of the items. Furthermore, I checked the dropbox vault both via a different iOS device that was not having this problem and also using the 1password anywhere feature and observed that passwords entered into the previous iPhone over the last several months did not sync to Dropbox. That said, it is important that I be able to recover the items that I assume were carried over with the iTunes backup. Please advise.

  • Hi @jyn‌ ,

    I have a few questions:

    1. When you restore to the new phone, are the items there before you try to sync with DropBox?
    2. Were you running the latest version of 1Password on the old iPhone? If not, which version was it?
    3. Is there data in your DropBox that is not on your iPhone backup? i.e. has there been changes made on your other devices since your iPhone stopped syncing to DropBox?

    Hi @hayesk,

Sorry for the delay. To answer your questions:

    1. No - there are actually no items
    2. Hmm, not completely sure as I no longer have the old phone.
    3. Don't think so - I really only modified or added items using my iPhone. I had an iPad syncing mostly for the convenience of retrieving passwords when I didn't have my phone within reach.

    Hi @jyn,

If I understand, it sounds like you restored your new iPhone from a device backup of your old iPhone in iTunes, and although the 1Password app was restored, none of your 1Password data was restored? Unfortunately we don't have control over that backup process so I'm not sure why it didn't work as expected.

The error message you're getting when trying to enable Dropbox sync in 1Password is probably simple to solve, but the bigger problem seems to be that your keychain file in Dropbox doesn't have the changes you made in the last few months. That could mean Dropbox sync was not actually working in 1Password on your iPhone for the last few months (since you no longer have that iPhone, there's no way to tell for sure).

But before we jump to conclusions, let's take care of the sync error:

    • In 1Password on your iPhone, go to Settings > Sync
    • Make sure sync is disabled (if so, it should say "Start Syncing")
    • Double-click the Home button and swipe up on 1Password to close it
    • Restart your iPhone (hold down the power button for a few seconds and "slide to power off", then turn it back on again)
    • After it restarts, open 1Password and try to set up Dropbox sync again

Do you receive the same error this time, or does the sync work? If it works, please allow the sync to complete, then check to see if any of your newer data is there, or if it's the same as what you saw in 1PasswordAnywhere and your iPad. Let us know how it goes, and we'll take it from there. Thanks!

These steps resulted in the same "Vault Exists" error, but I was able to recover the old iPhone with the original vault intact on it. If I remove the app from all other devices besides the original iPhone, turn off sync on the original iPhone, delete the vault from Dropbox, then re-establish sync on the original iPhone, I am hoping it will work.

  • Please do let us know how it turns out and if you need further assistance from us.

I would recommend making backups of what you currently have prior to making any changes:

Finally got around to trying this and it worked. Only thing worth noting is that it upon syncing the new iPhone it warned me about merging the "new" dropbox vault with the primary vault, but since the primary vault listed 0 items I went ahead and merged them and everything shows up now.

  • Thanks for the update, @jyn! Glad to hear that worked out for you.
