Did I just pay twice for 1Password 5?

I've used 1PW "Family" for several years, upgrading as new versions became available. About a month ago I installed the v5 upgrade (which I thought was free) after upgrading my OS to Yosemite. It seemed to work but a couple days ago the "Trial Expired" note appeared, and 1PW became locked. Agile bit discussions said I needed to download the new license, so I did this. I paid $25 and see that the license I downloaded is now "Single User." Did I just pay $25 to get less than I used to have?

I'm not sure why you had to pay to obtain the licence. Did you ever pay to upgrade from 1P3? The upgrade from 1P4 to 1P5 was free but that from 1P3 was not.

No: AgileBits changed their licensing terms to bring them more in line with the Mac App Store. Family licences no longer exist. Instead the licence terms (from this page) are as follows:

Our software is licensed per person and per platform, not per device. Each user and each platform requires a license. Licenses can be shared by up to six family members living in the same household. Licenses can not be transfered or re-sold.

    Hi @Rick W,

I was able to find your licenses in our system under the email address associated with your forum account. You bought a 1Password 3 for Mac license in early 2013 and received a free upgrade to 1Password 4 for Mac when it was released later that year. As Stephen mentioned, 1Password 5 for Mac was a free upgrade for version 4, so you did not need to purchase a new license for that. Therefore I've refunded the new purchase and you should see that reflected in your account shortly.

I also resent your license info to your email, and that will have a link to download & add your license file for 1Password 5 for Mac.

I hope that helps, but please let us know if you have additional questions! :)

Thanks for the refund and new license for v5. However, my wife, who logs in under her own account on our common iMac, still can't use 1PW. She gets a "Trial expired" message. How do I update the 1PW license under her login? (And btw - I still can't see how to download the 1PW version 5 without paying an upgrade fee)

Where is that going wrong for you? You can download from this page and then click on the link Drew_AG sent you to add your licence. If you then look at this knowledge base article you'll find where you licence is saved by 1P (in your 1P Software Licenses category). Drag it from there to your Desktop and transfer it to your wife's machine any way you like (email, Dropbox, USB stick, etc.). She can then add the licence on her machine in accordance with that knowledge base article.

@Rick W I think the license does not get added to the 1PW application, but to the 1PW data. That means that your wife has to apply the license file herself, even though you've done it in your account. The file can be copied over (either into the Shared user folder, or into the Dropbox folder in her Public folder - note that this has nothing to do with the Dropbox service), and then she can apply it.

    Thanks @Stephen_C and @danco! :)

Rick, I hope their answers help to clear up the confusion for you (and I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough in my own answer). If you need more help with that, please let us know!

Well, somehow I lucked into it. I forwarded your email containing the license to my wife, logged in under her ID, opened the email and clicked on the "install license" option. Low and behold, it worked: no more "Trial Expired" message and she can use 1Password now. btw, it's still a mystery how one can download the upgrade since your upgrade page charges for every product.

You just download the product from https://agilebits.com/downloads and apply whatever license you have (like you did). If you don't install the license, you just have the trial version.

    Hi @Rick W,

Hopefully you have a much better idea of how our licences work now but if you still have any questions do please ask

As stated already. Anybody can download the trial version of 1Password or legacy versions from our AgileBits Download page. If you have a licence you add it and the trial ends as you're licensed. The licence is held within your user account so other accounts will need to apply the licence but that's all covered in the current licence agreement so you're good to do so.

Our single licence covers you and 5 other family members (for a total of 6) on as many machines as you have of that same platform as our licences are per platform rather than per device. The idea is to try and ensure our licence is aligned with the one Apple use to be as (hopefully) as intuitive for our users. How we store the licence is simply different.
