Master password different on my Mac devices

I changed master password on my iPhone 6 plus, but for some reason my other Mac devices will only accept the old master password... Even though I have iCloud sync turned on.
Any ideas are appreciated.
Cheers

  • Hi @hearnp,

We fixed a bug related to syncing the change of your master password in the latest versions.

Are you running version 5.1 for Mac and version 5.2 for iOS? If so, were you running these versions when you changed your master password?

    Thanks in advance!

Hi, same to me. I first purchased the Mac edition, set it up, then synced to my iPhone. Now, 1P on the second Mac that I setup just a few days ago wants the old master password. No big problem, but it looks odd!

All syncs were made by using the default or the most suggested settings (iCloud, I suppose).
Running OS X 10.10.1 on the old Mac, 10.10.2 on the new one and iOS 8.1.2 on the iPhone and the latest 1P version on both worlds: devices are set to automatically update apps.

    Hi @Streeme

It should be the case that if you were to change your password now it will propagate across all machines. While we believe we've fixed many of the bugs surrounding this it won't retroactively fix instances of this. If you were to change your password from within 1Password 5.1 for Mac it should behave as expected.

If you find that isn't the case do please let us know!

I'm having a similar problem. I am running OS X 10.10.2 and am syncing via iCloud. I am running v5.1 on my Mac and v5.2 on two iOS devices. I changed the Master Password on the Mac but the iOS devices didn't sync. I had to do it manually. I understood the problem was fixed with the 5.2 iOS update. Have I missed something?

    Hi @JimT46,

Depending on when you did all of this, can you remember the details of what you tried and what failed at all? Do you also use either a PIN or Touch ID?

The devil is in the details as they say. Certainly if we can reproduce a Master Password sync issue I will definitely bring it to the attention of the devs.

    Hi littlebobbytables,

Thanks for the response.. I changed the master password on my Mac and waited for about 15 minutes or so and neither of my iOS devices seemed to pick up the change. I am using touch ID on both of them and that continued to work. I assumed that they were tied to the old password but I'm not sure. After the 15 minutes passed I manually changed the password on both the iPhone and iPad.

    Hi @JimT46,

When you say neither of your iOS devices seemed to pick up the change, were you actively trying the new Master Password or were you expecting to be denied access when using Touch ID and forced to enter the new one before being able to proceed? I'm suspecting it is the latter. You probably don't want to change you Master Password again and I certainly don't expect you to but I believe if you had instructed 1Password on your iOS devices that the Master Password was required that you could have entered the new one.

I'm looking at something relating to this for somebody else so I will be mucking about with this in an attempt to break it.

    Hi lttlebobbytables,

You're correct, I assumed that my Touch ID would fail if the password had changed. If that isn't the case then I have learned something new. Thanks!

    Hi @JimT46,

Depending on whether you're using Touch ID, PIN or only Master Password here is what you can expect.

If you change your Master Password, say on a Mac for simplicity, you can continue unlocking the vault on iOS devices using the old Master Password, PIN or Touch ID. It will continue to sync because while the Master Password has changed the encryption keys don't.

To force the use of the newer Master Password will depend on how you currently unlock your vault.

    1. If you normally unlock your vault using your Master Password then simply entering the new Master Password should unlock and remove the old Master Password as being viable. So at this point only the new Master Password will work
    2. If you normally unlock your vault using a PIN then you would need to go to Settings > Security > Lock Now. That will lock 1Password and require your Master Password to successfully unlock. At this point please note that 1. applies, you could enter your old one and gain access again. The solution is as described as in 1.
    3. If you normally unlock your vault using Touch ID then the method in 2. will work but you can also use the Enter Password option on the Touch ID window to require the Master Password, it's like a shortcut to Settings > Security > Lock Now which the PIN interface doesn't have. As with 2., 1. then applies.

Feel free to comment on this. If I haven't made anything clear or if this isn't how you expected it to behave please do let us know your thoughts

Hi littlebobbytables, a bit confusing but I do think I have it. Thanks. I understand the issue now and appreciate all the information. I really love this product and thought perhaps I was just assuming facts not in evidence. It seems I was. :)

    Hi @JimT46,

I think this is something where we've learned something too and documentation, just like code is about moving forwards and learning from our mistakes
