How to sync secondary vaults through WiFi

Hi,

Guys, first thanks for the updates with the new features! Great job!

I couldn't manage to sync my secondary vaults through WiFi. Would you please help? My setup:

  • 1Password for Mac, version 5.1 (510027), Apple Store version, with 1 primary vault syncing through iCloud, 2 secondary vaults with no sync options set, WiFi server enabled in the preferences set to sync all vaults (primary and secondary) through the WiFi.
  • 1Password for iOS (iPhone), full version (€9,99) with one primary vault syncing through iCloud with the primary vault on the Mac.

I want to sync my secondary vaults on my Mac to my iPhone. I cannot find where to do so. I looked in Settings -> Sync on iOS but only the primary vault is there. I also tried Settings -> Vaults -> Add Vault -> create demo Vault (on iOS) but with the new demo Vault I have only Dropbox Sync.

What should I do?

Thank you!
Omid

By the way: the iOS version installed is 5.2.

    Hi @Omid,

We've got a handy article in our User Guide that will help you set up Wi-Fi sync in 1Password 5. Have you tried following the steps there?

    Hi @Megan,

I have followed the instructions literally. I have setup the WiFi server on the Mac in 1Password. One of your specialists told me that the WiFi sync should be initiated from the iPhone (via twitter). I tried to do so, also according to the User Guide, but I didn't see any 'Sync using WiFi' option.

I also tested this: on the iPhone I changed the sync option of the primary Vault from iCloud to WiFi and it synced as expected. I have now the secondary Vaults (which already exist on my Mac) also on my iPhone. So it did sync all the 3 Vaults. I changed the sync option of the primary Vault back to iCloud and then again I don't have any more possibilities to sync through WiFi, not even for the secondary Vaults. I may sync the primary only through iCloud and the secondary only through Dropbox (if I wish, which I don't).

I suspect this has to do with the fact that my primary Vault is set to sync through iCloud. If the primary Vault is set to sync through iCloud, WiFi sync is disabled totally, even for the secondary Vaults. Is this right?

    Hi @Omid,

You're correct - when you disabled Wi-Fi sync for the Primary vault on your iPhone (and switched to iCloud sync), that also disabled Wi-Fi sync for the secondary vaults. This is because of the way Wi-Fi sync works with multiple vaults, which is different from the other sync methods. To sync secondary vaults via Wi-Fi, the Primary vault must also sync via Wi-Fi.

I'm very sorry for the confusion about that! If you want to sync your secondary vaults via Wi-Fi, you'll need to switch the Primary vault back to Wi-Fi sync. Alternately (and as you already know), you can sync the secondary vaults individually via Dropbox sync.

If you have more questions about that, please let us know - we're always happy to help! :)

    Hi @Drew_AG,

Oh, that's not too great! :/ I was hoping to be able to sync my secondary vaults through WiFi and keep the primary one syncing through iCloud. It seems to me strange though because in the mac I shouldn't disable syncing the primary Vault through WiFi to be able to sync the whole thing through WiFi. Why should I do that in the iOS version then?

Anyway, guys I'm really hoping you may consider this long waited feature. I would love to have more freedom syncing over iCloud and WiFi for different Vaults and not be restricted by the sync method chosen for the first Vault.

Keep up the good works guys and thanks for the effort!

    Hi @Omid

Can I ask, why do you want to sync the primary via a cloud service but not the secondaries? Understanding our customers will help us hence the question. My perception is customers that don't like cloud services at all account for most of our Wi-Fi syncing so the current system would be acceptable. Your hopes though run contrary to that impression.

As to whether or not it will happen. While I'm not a developer my understanding is it could require a substantial re-write for that part of the code. At the moment the secondary vaults are piggybacking off the Primary vault syncing and that's why it has to be that way. If I'm correct it would mean it isn't a quick fix that could be implemented in a point point release.

I can submit a request but it would help if you could explain why this is necessary (from your perspective). Essentially each request has to make a case for itself over the others. Some requests are easy to explain and may very well be things we, as in us here at AgileBits, would also love to see 1Password do or handle. In this case, because I'm not quite seeing where you're coming from you can help me with why this over just cloud sync is desirable.

I look forward to hearing your side

    Hi @littlebobbytables ,

Thank you very much for your attention.

To keep it very simple, my situation is as follows: I have two Vaults, one for everyday passwords which I would like to keep in sync between my Apple devices (Mac, iPhone and iPad) using the iCloud. I'm not that concerned that the information in this Vault goes through a cloud service (in this case iCloud). Because I use this first Vault intensively, I prefer to keep it as Primary Vault. I have a second Vault containing more private data and I require to sync it exclusively through my own WiFi and explicitly not through any cloud service.

Until the latest update, I didn't have any possibilities to transfer/sync my second (secondary) Vault(s) from my Mac to my iOS devices. I'm very happy with the latest update which enables me to transfer/sync my second (secondary) Vault(s) to my iOS devices. However to do so, I'm required to change the sync settings on the iOS devices every time I would like to sync the secondary Vault(s) which is inconvenient.

I hope I'm clear enough. If not, please let me know.

    Hi @Omid

Thank you for writing back. Can I ask, why not switch to just Wi-Fi Sync? I assume there is a downside in how you have everything set up (I'm a Wi-Fi Sync user myself by the way). Again, asking to better understand

    Hi @littlebobbytables ,

I regularly modify my Primary Vault in any of those Apple devices. Having it synced through the iCloud makes it that I have the latest modified version always on all my devices. I love this feature.

WiFi syncing should be triggered manually. This is a little drawback but I don't mind it for my secondary Vault in favor of the privacy which I require for this Vault. My secondary Vault is also modified less often.

Guys, Any progress on this? Will it be possible to sync the second vault through WiFi while the primary vault is syncing through iCloud?

    Thank you for considering!

  • Hi @Omid,

Unfortunately not, at least for the next while (it's not part of the upcoming 5.3 release). That would require a bigger change than might seem necessary. It's something we're aware that users want though, so know that when we discuss the future of Wi-Fi sync it's a scenario that's on our mind.

Thanks for being vocal about your wanting this feature. Knowing users want something specific helps us determine where to put focus.

    Rick
