Making primary vault secondary

Good afternoon,

After falling short for searching for over an hour for a good answer on this, I've opted to post this on the forum. Apologies if I overlooked a topic where an answer was already given.

I have two vaults. Home (Primary) and Work (Secondary). At work I'd like to use the 'Work' vault as a primary vault, since it enables me to use the keyboard shortcuts more properly. Is there a way to do this? Preferably I'd like to use the 'Home' vault as a primary vault at home, but I can work with it if that isn't possible.

Thanks for all the help in advance!

    Hi @gerardtop,

It's definitely possible to swap which vault is Primary and which is secondary, although it's not very easy. I'll be happy to give you all the steps you'll need to do that, but first I wanted to offer a suggestion which might help:

There are keyboard shortcuts for 1Password to easily switch between vaults: ⌘1 is for the Primary vault, ⌘2 is for the secondary vault (if you have more vaults, they'll use ⌘3, ⌘4, and so on, in the order they're listed in 1Password). Those work in the main 1Password app as well as the browser extension. When you're at work and need to fill your login info on a work-related website, start by pressing the usual ⌘\ shortcut. When the extension appears, press ⌘2 to switch to the secondary vault. (1Password will remember you're using that vault until the next time it's locked, so you won't need to do that every time.)

If you'd still rather swap the vaults at work, I'll just need to know a few details to make sure we give you the correct steps:

    • Are both computers (home and work) Macs?
    • Which version of 1Password are you using on each computer?
    • How are you syncing your 1Password data?
    • Do you sync your 1Password data with any other devices?

    Thanks!

    Hi @Drew_AG,

Thanks for your reply. It is certainly good to know about the keyboard shortcuts if I need to switch to a certain vault. Also nice to know that 1Password remembers my preference, until the next time it's locked. That would make it a bit less cumbersome indeed. However, I am still interested in that option to switch the vaults, if I can see myself doing it at least. That depends on the answer.

Currently, this is how I've set 1Password up (if for some reason another setup is more preferable for the solution I'm happy to hear so):

    • Both computers are Macs. At work I work on the latest MacBook Pro, at home I'm using a 2008 model of it
    • I'm using 5.1 (510027) on both Macs
    • I'm syncing via Dropbox
    • I also sync my data with an iPhone 5, running 5.2 (502015)

Many thanks for your reply in advance!

    Hi @gerardtop,

No problem, this should actually be relatively simple - the fact that you're using Dropbox sync for each vault and also have your data on your home Mac and iPhone will make this whole process much easier! :)

On your work Mac, what you would need to do is reset 1Password, then set it up again by syncing your "work vault" as the Primary, and your "personal vault" as the secondary. (You won't need to make any changes on your home Mac or your iPhone.) Here are the steps you can follow to do that:

    • On your work Mac, reset 1Password by following our Starting Over steps.
    • After that, when you launch 1Password, it should be like you’re running it for the first time.
    • Choose the option for I've used 1Password before.
    • Select the option to sync a vault from Dropbox, and choose your work vault.
    • When prompted, enter the master password for your work vault.

At this point, your work vault should now be the Primary vault on your work Mac. To add your personal vault as the secondary vault:

    • On your work Mac, navigate to your Dropbox folder, and find the .agilekeychain for your personal vault.
    • Double-click that .agilekeychain file, and 1Password should prompt you to create a new vault.
    • Enter your master password for that vault, then click Create Vault.

If all goes well, you should be all set now! Please let us know if you have questions about that or run into any problems.
