Iphone 4S with 1password 3.7.2 and can't upgrade to IOS 8

So I'm going to get a new iPhone 6 so I thought I'd better get my ducks in a row on 1 password. But now I have a problem. I can't upgrade my 4S to IOS 8 and therefore it seems I can't upgrade my 1 password from 3.7.2 to 5. My real concern here is how do I avoid losing all my passwords when I migrate to the iPhone 6? Suggestions? Many thanks.

    Hi @lsc112,

there is still a way to migrate to a newer 1Password version on your 4S. Do you have a chance to 'purchase' 1Password 5 via iTunes on a computer? If that is possible you should be able to download an older 1Password version to your iPhone using your purchases. It will ask you if you want to download an older version. After that you can go through the migration process from 1Password 3 to 1Password 4. Please enable syncing once everything is migrated so you can easily get to your 1Password data on your new iPhone.

Let me know if that will work for you otherwise we will try to find a different solution.

Hi Winnie, thanks for responding. I've downloaded 1 password 4 as you suggested and am trying to sync. My phone seems to be stuck on "authenticating? should I be worried or does this just take time. Would it make sense for me to contact you directly be email rather than on the forum?

OK I think I figured it out. So it appears I've synced everything to 1password 4. NOW what do I have to do so that when I get my iPhone 6 I can still access all my information in 1 password. THANKS WINNIE!

    Hi @lsc112,

It sounds like you have all your 1Password data in version 4 now. If so, the next step (if you haven't already done so) would be to set up Dropbox sync in 1Password 4. Once you've done that, you can use the 1PasswordAnywhere feature from a web browser on a computer to confirm your 1Password data is in Dropbox.

If your data is in Dropbox, then once you get your iPhone 6, all you need to do is install 1Password 5 from the App Store, and when you open it for the first time you will want to choose the Sync existing vault option, then Sync with Dropbox and follow any additional steps to complete the setup.

On your iPhone 4S, I also recommend you save a backup of your 1Password 4 data on a computer by following the steps here: iTunes Backups

If you have more questions or need help with any of that, please let us know! :)

I'm in the same position. But I just went to iTunes to download version 4 and ended up downloading version 5 (which won't run on the connected 4S) and got charged for it - which I already have running on the new phone... WTF? I'm not having much fun here...

  • Hi @JuanBoy,

That's odd - version 5 is free on the store, so I can't see how it would have charged for it. When you received your receipt from Apple after the purchase (it would have been emailed to you), what was the product name displayed on the receipt and what price did it show?

You're probably right hayesk. I thought I saw my standing account balance change. But the fact remains that I was not given an option to download version 4. So I've got version 3 on old phone, version 5 on new, and version 5 in apps bank of iTunes. What now? I spent an hour w Apple support yesterday and they were not able to solve this one w/o telling me that it looks like I need to install 1pw on laptop (for ~$50) just to get this done. That can't be right.

    Hi @JuanBoy,

I'm sorry to hear that you were not given an option to download 1Password 4. There is some additional information about this workaround in another thread that suggests that it may not work if your computer is using OS X 10.10 (Yosemite).

Now, because 1Password 5 was released as an update to 1Password 4, 1Password 4 for iOS is no longer available in the App Store. But we can still keep you synced up with 1Password 3. It'll just take a bit of finagling. Here's what we'll do:

    • Use Dropbox for 1Password 5 for iOS on your new phone.
    • Install 1Password 3 for Mac on your Mac (you can download a Legacy version on our downloads page, just scroll to the bottom of the page to fine version 3).
    • When 1Password is installed on your Mac, you can open your existing datafile by double-clicking on the 1Password.agilekeychain file in Dropbox. 1Password will pop open and prompt you for your Master Password.
    • Use Wi-Fi Sync between 1Password 3 for Mac and 1Password 3 for iOS.

Now, if this solution works for you, please let me know and I'll generate a license for 1Password 3 for you. :)
