Question about multiple vaults
Hi all,
I have never used multiple vaults before, but I'm looking at how I can make it work for me.
On my personal computer, I have my main vault that I've used since I started with 1Password. On my work computer, I have a single vault just storing my work based information. My personal computer doesn't have my work vault and my work system doesn't have my personal vault. (basically both personal and work show it as their primary vault).
Currently my iPhone syncs through dropbox with my personal account. I'd love to find a way to have my work vault on my iPhone as well while keeping it off my personal computer. Is there a way to do this? I was somewhat under the impression that I'd have to have multiple vaults with the system that syncs with my iPhone, but I need to keep the work vaults off of my personal computers.

I'm also confused. Do I have to use different dropbox accounts for different vaults? (Yes, I still didn't read user guide :) )

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the second vault I want to use, I can't sync it through dropbox (security policy restrictions) which means I'd need to use a different method of getting it to my device, but in my case I have two vaults from two separate installs rather than 2 vaults managed by a single install so I think our problems are a tad different :)

Hi @Nethfel,
Great question! You can indeed have a different combination of vaults on each of your devices. I think it's a great idea to keep work and home separate, while still keeping both handy on your iPhone, just in case.
Unfortunately, Dropbox is the most flexible of our sync options here. It's the simplest way to get both of your vaults onto your iOS device. Now, we might be able to make this work with Wi-Fi sync. Here's the basic idea:
- We'll need to start fresh with 1Password on your iPhone.
- First step is to set up Wi-Fi sync between your work vault and your iPhone.
- Then, we'll add your home vault, synced via Dropbox.
I'd be happy to work through this with you in more detail, so let me know what you think of the idea, and we'll proceed from there!
Hi @firebird2,
You do not need to use separate Dropbox accounts for multiple vaults. One of the benefits of Dropbox and multiple vaults is that you can sync your data across multiple Dropbox accounts, in case you are sharing with family or co-workers who have their own Dropbox accounts, but 1Password can store all of your vaults in one Dropbox account.
Our Multiple Vaults section of the User Guide is quite informative, if you're interested in multiple vaults, I highly recommend it. And our Docs team is great at keeping the guide from being too dull and boring!
Please let me know if you have any further questions, we'd be happy to help. :)
