Touch ID reliably crashes 1Password on iPhone 5S

Hi agilebitters,

I found that 1Password crashes regularly on me while using touch ID on my iPhone 5S:

Steps to reproduce:
tap on 1 Password out of a sportlight search
hold thumb immediately on touch ID sensor
App shows Login dialogue and crashes so hard, even app switching is not possible anymore.

If i wait until the app is fully loaded before putting my finger on the sensor, everything is fine.

    Hi @shorshe,

I suspect you would find the same is true even if you remove the Spotlight Search from the steps and simply launch 1Password from the home screen. Unfortunately while we are aware that a very small number of our users are experiencing this but we've been unable to replicate it at all which is hindering the diagnosis of the issue. Annoyingly for those suffering the issue the only workaround at the moment is as you've discovered, to ensure your finger isn't resting on the sensor until Apple's window regarding Touch ID is displayed. I'm sorry it isn't better news at the moment.

I've got an iPhone 6+ and confirm that it's the same problem on there. It doesn't matter how you launch 1Password, if you have your finger on the home button ready for touchID it will lock up your phone.

You can't hit cancel or authenticate after this point, only way I've found out is to turn your phone off and back on again. If you remember to raise your finger for a second or two until 1Password has launched then it works fine.

Hopefully a fix can be found, I don't remember this problem in earlier versions so I think it's a bug that's been introduced in the last release.

    Hi @reck,

Thanks for letting us know! I'm sorry you're also having trouble with this. Our developers believe this may be an iOS bug, but they've been investigating the issue to see if we're able to do anything on our side to prevent the problem. It's a strange issue, but if they're able to do anything about it, they certainly will, as we've been hearing about this from other users as well.

For now (as you already know), you can avoid this issue by waiting for the Touch ID prompt to appear in 1Password before scanning your fingerprint.

If you have more questions about that, please let us know!

    Thanks Drew,

As you say I think this may be an iOS thing, which wouldn't surprise me as iOS 8 has been the buggiest version Apple has every released in my opinion. I hope the rumours are true and apple are going to focus on bug fixes and optimisation for iOS 9 over lots of new features.

I have a couple of other apps I protect with TouchID and they don't seem to suffer the same problem as much as 1Password does though.

  • Thanks for the feedback, reck. I wouldn't mind a "Snow" iOS release either. :)

I am having the Touch ID problem with iPhone 6. I have to keep my finger off the touch ID sensor until I am prompted by 1Password. If I put my finger down too soon, 1Password screen will lock up on the main page and turn gray, and the only solution is a reboot. It's a hard habit to break because for every other use of Touch ID I put my finger down immediately (unlocking the screen, using Apple Pay, etc.) It's occurred about 10-15 times in the last couple of months, I can't remember if it was associated with an IOS software update.

    Hi @Dakotakim,

I'm sorry you're also running into this problem! As you can see in the other messages here, we believe this might be related to a bug in iOS 8. We've had trouble reproducing it on our own devices which makes it quite difficult for our developers to figure out why it's happening. However, some users have reported seeing the same thing happen in other apps as well, which is part of the reason we think it's due to an iOS bug. Our developers are working with Apple to get to the bottom of this, so hopefully they'll find a solution soon.

For now (and as you already know), you can avoid this problem if you wait until you see the Touch ID prompt in 1Password before touching the fingerprint scanner. I know using Touch ID immediately can be a hard habit to break though - I'm also very used to doing that on my iPhone! ;)

If the problem happens again, you can try double-clicking on the Home button. If that brings up the app switcher, you can swipe up on 1Password to force quit the app, then relaunch it and it should work. If the Home button is non-responsive, you can also try pressing the power button to turn the screen off, then turn it back on and try the Home button again. If you're stuck in 1Password and can't force quit, then you'll probably need to reboot the device like you've been doing.
