Synchronization between iPad and iPhone not working

A friend of mine uses 1Password on her iPad Air with iOS 8 and wanted now also to use it on her iPhone 4 with iOS 7. Both iOS devices are connected to the same iCloud account. 1Password on the iPad is set up for synchronization via iCloud and is actually also stating that it is synchronizing ("Last Sync ... 5 seconds ago").

After installing 1Password (the older version because the iPhone runs with iOS 7) on the iPhone (the older version because the iphone runs with iOS 7) 1Password asked whether it had been used before or whether this would be the first use of 1Password. I tried the first option (been used before) and then chose iCloud synchronization. 1Password then connected to iCloud but came back with the error message that there would be no data found for it on iCloud.

How can this be made work?

I have bad news @desertman - it can't be made to work.

So you are of course wondering why not (or maybe something a little stronger). The reason is the sweeping changes Apple made to iCloud when they released iOS 8 and Yosemite.

The new and improved iCloud is probably best known as iCloud Drive and it required the user to upgrade which was a irreversible action. When you do this you cut off every device and machine running anything other than iOS 8 or Yosemite.

When we worked on 1Password 5 we made the decision to shift to this new iCloud because it brought along with it something called the CloudKit framework. This framework promised to vastly improve iCloud syncing which we really needed and our customers wanted. The bad news is it means 1Password 5 can only iCloud Sync with other copies of 1Password 5 and it requires iCloud Drive.

Eventually everybody will have transitioned over and this painful band-aid rip will be behind us. Apple aren't afraid of making tough decisions like this if they believe it's for the better.

Now you do still have syncing options. Dropbox is not just platform agnostic but also pretty version tolerant. You can easily sync 1Password 4 with 1Password 5 between those two iOS devices if you don't have any objection to Dropbox.

Let us know how you feel about Dropbox and if you need any assistance with it.
