[BUG] Chrome Extension Blocks Chrome Browser Sign-in when Two Factor Authentication is Enabled

Conditions

  • Latest Chrome (Version 40.0.2214.111 (64-bit))
  • Mac 10.10.2 (14C109)
  • 1Password: Password Manager and Secure Wallet 4.2.5.90

Background

The sign-in to chrome form is a small popup window with an HTML form in it. When pasting a password into the form, and pressing the button to continue, the 1Password extension immediately prompts to save or update the password. If two factor authentication is enabled, there is a second page in the form where the two factor key must be entered. However, the user can never get to that second page as the 1Password extension will always steal the focus.

Issue

The 1Password extension takes over the browser focus causing the native chrome popup form window to close before the next page can be displayed, where the two factor key is entered.

Workaround

  1. Disable the extension
  2. Sign in
  3. Fill 2FA key
  4. Enable the extension

Possible Solution / Feature Request

Implement a pause when prompting to save passwords in the chrome:// scheme

    Hi @Elliottp,

This is a known issue and the only work around is to disable the auto-save feature temporarily before signing in. You can disable it in the main 1Password's Preferences > Browsers window and uncheck the Automatically ask to save new Logins. Once you're logged in with Chrome, check the option in 1Password to re-enable auto-save.

Implement a pause when prompting to save passwords in the chrome:// scheme

The problem is that it is not the address for the popup itself, you can use the popup on any frontmost tab and the extension sees the address of the frontmost tab, not the popup.

If your frontmost tab is gmail and you click on the avatar to login, the extension sees gmail, not the popup. That's why there is no quick fix for this at the moment, we can't see the source address of the popup.

We will investigate for a better solution in a future update and/or work with Google to fix this. It is possible we won't be able to fix this.

    Issue ID #: OPX-625

    Hi,

I can't login to my Chrome profile using the button in the upper right corner of the browser, cause 1Password popups asking to save the password and the window login hides automatically. If I click in the button again the login process starts from the beginning so I can never input the code received in my mobile.
As a workaround I had to temporary disable the extension to get login.

    Thanks!

  • Hi @gelo,

Thanks for reporting this. I've merged your thread into this one that is related. Please read my post above as it'll explain why it is happening and we'll keep looking for a workaround.

Right now, the best way to work around it is to disable auto-save before asking Chrome to sign in.

If you have 2-step authentication enabled with Google, and you try to sign into Google Chrome in the browser, the 1Password extension will interrupt the process. After entering the Google password into Chrome but before being allowed to enter the 2nd step verification code, 1Password will open a dialog that interrupts the sign-on process. Had to disable the 1Password extension to fix this.

    Hi @nathanw,

I'm sorry the 1Password extension is interrupting you when signing into Chrome! I merged your message with this discussion about the same problem. This is a known issue, and our developers are working on a fix. In the meantime, please take a look at this post above for more information, including a workaround.

If you have more questions about that, please let us know. Thanks!
