Upgrading to 1Password Version 5 for Mac

I'm a current user of 1Password; I am running 1Password 3.8.21. Actually I haven't used it for a while but am ready to start again. I see that the current version is version 5. I'm planning to buy and install version 5. Since I haven't used it for a while, I don't need to migrate any data. Questions:
1. Is there a discount since I currently have version 3 or do i pay full price for new version?
2. Is there a site discount. My wife is also a current (non)user of version 3.8. Both of us want to use 1password on our MacBook Air.

Thanks,

There is a discounted price for previous users, as long as you buy directly from AgileBits. There aren't any such discounts from the Mac App Store. Do know, however, that if you want to use iCloud for syncing, you must buy from Apple. (I should state that you must be on OS X 10.10, Yosemite, to uses version 5, if you didn't already know that.)

You should be able to find the discounted price by filling in the license key for version 3 when you are getting ready to buy.

And the license terms have changed since you bought version 3. With the arrival of version 5, a single user license covers use by as many as six family members in the same household. So one purchase will cover use by both of you.

If I've missed anything, post back.

Thanks for very prompt response. I just found this email from AgileBits.

    1Password 5 for Mac
    Family License
    Name: Rxxxxx Dxxxxx
    Download: https://agilebits.com/downloads
Register: With 1Password downloaded, click here to automatically add your license
    Notes:

No link? Link not working? View the complete installation steps.

Your 1Password 5 license entitles you to use 1Password 3 and 4 as well. Your 1Password 3 license key is 1PWB-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. 1Password 4 uses the same license file as 1Password 5.

I can't tell from this email if I have already purchased 1Password v5 or not. Thanks. Robert

I would say you have purchased your license, based on what you quoted from that message, but I'm not an AgileBits employee, so I can't check to be sure.

Did you use a Gmail address? Gmail has been stripping out the link to click to automatically install the license. If you can't see such a link, there also should be one to click to see complete instructions for installing the license. In fact, your text includes reference to that process: "No link? Link not working? View the complete installation steps."That will take you where you can download the license file and give you directions for installing it.

BTW, I removed most of the version 3 license key you posted. That's unique to you, and shouldn't be shared publicly. I also removed your full name.

  • Hi @rdeutsch,

That's definitely a 1Password 5 license, it includes a license key for 1Password 3 if you need that. 1Password 4 and 5 uses the same license file.

Are you able to get it licensed? The View the complete installation steps should be linked if Gmail stripped the license file link.

Thanks for response. I have succcessfully downloaded 1Pass V5. However, when I click on License in the 1Password pull down menu, it states that I am running in Trial Mode and have 30 days remaining. I am given the option to Add License or Buy Now. When I click on add license, I get a screen which displays 1Password Registration, then shows all my files. I'm not sure what to do to use the license key for 1Password 3 - ie do I create a file with my 1Password3 license number, what type of file, etc.

Also once I solve this, I want to have my wife use it; I'm a bit confused on what my options are. As a point of info, we access a handful of the same websites so want to have different user ID's/password pairs for those websites. Seems like the cheapest is to use a family license but I don't know if that results in any restrictions. At this time, I will only use 1Password from my Mac; my wife will use it from her Mac and her IPad. We also both plan to purchse IPhones so will use it from those devices as well.

    Thanks, Robert

    Hi @rdeutsch,

Lets get your copy of 1Password 5 licensed first.

That email that you pasted part of the contents from, there should be three links but gmail strips one out so it gets a bit harder for the poor gmail users. We don't know why it does and as far as I know it's just gmail.

For 1Password 4/5 you will need to download your licence file from a link in the email and it should look a little like this:

    1Password 5 for Mac

    Name: littlebobbytables

    Download: https://agilebits.com/downloads

Register: With 1Password downloaded, click here to automatically add your license

    Notes:

No link? Link not working? View the complete installation steps.

Obviously I've stripped out the last two links as those are unique to the licensee. If you're viewing the email from within gmail at all you may very well find the second URL is stripped out - thank you gmail :\

The second or third link though should allow you to download your licence file so while we haven't attached the licence file, the information needed to obtain it should be contained within.

Now downloading your licence file should be enough for it to automatically be recognised but if not you will have the file and then you can add it.

Now in regards to your query of vaults. Vaults are actually completely independent of the licence. You can have a single 1Password licence and 15 vaults in that copy of 1Password if you wish. Your licence just covers who can use 1Password rather than how you use it.

So on this MacBook Air that you share, do you keep separate user accounts or do you share a single user account? That's actually going to be the part that most influences how you use 1Password as 1Password assumes one user per user account.

If the MacBook Air is out of the equation and it's as you described in the last post

At this time, I will only use 1Password from my Mac; my wife will use it from her Mac and her IPad. We also both plan to purchse IPhones so will use it from those devices as well.

Then we can pretty much use most of the standard vault scenarios. You can have separate vaults, you can share a primary vault between all of your machines and devices or you can have a primary vault personal to you and then you share a secondary vault for the common items. It's pretty much which best suits your needs. Sharing a vault will require Dropbox or Wi-Fi Sync and just to let you know that as our licences are per platform that if you like the free version of 1Password for iOS and need the pro features that you will have to make that purchase independently of your existing licence.

So there's a bit of information there to digest. Once we have a better idea of how you imagine you would like your vaults laid out we can show you the steps required. Let us know how you get along.
