two icons of 1password in Launchpad

Hi,
I am now a registered user of 1password (Mac and iOS). After buying a licence for my Mac (Yosemite 10.10.2) after the trial period of 1password finished, I ended with two icons of 1password in the launchpad AND in Finder , Applications. The first one reads "1Password" and the other one "1Password 5". Both are version 5.1. Is it normal? What am i going to do now? can i delete either one without losing my data?
Thank you
Harry

  • Hi @cgmache,

Did you buy 1Password at the Mac App Store after trying our trial version of 1Password? If yes, that explains it. The trial version is the same as the website version, which is a separate version from the Mac App Store version.

The 1Password.app file is the Mac App Store version while the 1Password 5.app is the website/trial version. When you installed the MAS version, it will automatically clone over the data from the website version.

    Try this:

    1. Open 1Password 5.app in your Applications folder, go to the 1Password Menu > Preferences > General to uncheck Always keep 1Password mini running.
    2. Go to the 1Password Menu > Quit 1Password to close 1Password
    3. Move the 1Password 5.app file to your Trash folder. Do not allow any app-cleaning tools to clean up after 1Password.

After this, you should be all set to go. Open the 1Password.app file now in LaunchPad or in your Applications folder, make sure everything is working fine now.

Let us know how you get along @cgmache,

Whatever happens, do not worry. If all you do is remove the 1Password application then none of your data is ever touched in the process. I only mention that as if you have been running both versions then you may very well have two vaults. If the vault you see afterwards seems to be missing something just let us know and don't worry it won't be missing as a result of anything you've done.

Hi, i did what you have instructed me and everything works fine. There is only a slight discrepancy with the number of passwords. The deleted 1password hold 111 passwords and the remained one 108. What happened please? is it my mistake? however I have all these passwords on my iPad as well. Thank you

    Hi @cgmache,

    It isn't your mistake.

Here is what I would like you to do.

First, I want to confirm you are definitely running the Mac App Store (MAS) version of 1Password now and that one is the one with 108 items. To do this open up the only 1Password on your machine and unlock your vault as you normally would. Confirm it has the 108 items and then go look in 1Password > About 1Password. If in that window is says Mac App Store that is our confirmation.

So what has happened is you've purchased the MAS version, run it at least once in the past (so it imported the vault from the trial) but then you reverted to using the Agile Web Store (AWS) version and added a couple more passwords. Once both versions are up and running with their own vault though they don't go back and check the one they imported from - that's what has caught you out.

It is resolvable though and here is how. We're going to remove the vault from the MAS version and we're going to force it to reimport the AWS vault which has the 111 items. We have a guide for Starting Over. Now I want you to read the instructions carefully. You'll only want to follow the bit for the MAS version as we want to leave the AWS vault where it is (so we can import it later). Each step is important due to caching etc.

If you follow those steps carefully for the MAS version then it will import the AWS vault automatically and when you open 1Password up again it will still ask for the same Master Password but not you should have 111 items and not 108.

Now after this you will need to set up 1Password in terms of preferences again and reinitialise syncing with your iPad. However after that you shouldn't have any problems going forward as we'll be across this blip of having run the two versions.

If you have any questions about any of this please do ask before starting.

    Hi and thank you,
    1) Yes, I have now the MAS version. 2) Yes, I run both versions without realising that they are different versions. 3) I will go through the guide over the weekend. 4) IMHO, isn't a little confusing for a user to be allowed to run 2 different versions of the same program, creating two different vaults without knowing it etc. etc. etc? 5) is there any difference between AWS and MAS versions? 6) Have you any version running on Blackberry OS 10?
Anyway, thank you very much again for your help and your immediate and prompt replies.

    Hi @cgmache,

I'm sorry for any confusion about the differences between the AWS and MAS versions of 1Password! To answer your questions:

IMHO, isn't a little confusing for a user to be allowed to run 2 different versions of the same program, creating two different vaults without knowing it etc. etc. etc?

Sure, it can sometimes be confusing in situations like this. The reason it happens has to do with the difference between apps available on the Mac App Store, and apps available from other sources. Apps from MAS are part of sandboxing, and they store data in a different location than non-MAS apps. Therefore the AWS and MAS versions of 1Password must store data in different locations on your Mac, which means it's possible for them to have different data. We can't prevent people from installing both versions, but that's not usually a problem because the majority of users will only install one or the other.

is there any difference between AWS and MAS versions?

The main difference is that only the MAS version has the iCloud sync option. Otherwise, they're basically the same thing with a few minor differences. For example, the AWS version needs to be activated with a license key file, but the MAS version is automatically activated during installation because it's tied to the Apple ID used to purchase it. Also, the AWS version checks for updates on our website, but the MAS version is updated via the Mac App Store (like the other MAS apps).

Have you any version running on Blackberry OS 10?

We don't have a BlackBerry version of 1Password, although some users run our Android version on their BlackBerry device with the built-in Android emulator. Of course, the Google Play Store services are not available on BlackBerry, so the Premium features in that version of 1Password cannot be unlocked.

I hope things go well when following the steps from littlebobbytables. If you need more help with that, please let us know!

thank you once again. could you also please let me know how i can transfer the licence from my old iPhone 4s to my new iPhone 6?

    Hi @cgmache,

On iOS, there's no "license" you need to transfer. Apps that you download from the App Store are associated with your Apple ID. As long as you're signed in the App Store with that same Apple ID on your new iPhone 6, you can see all the apps you've purchase in App Store > Updates > Purchased. Just tap the cloud icon next to the app you want to download.

If you sync your 1Password data via iCloud or Dropbox, you can sync your vault using that same sync option when setting up 1Password on your iPhone 6.

Hopefully you're all set, but we're here for you if you need anything else!
