Family use confirmation needed
Hi,
I am looking at purchasing 1Password but I need some confirmation. I have the following PC's and devices that I want to run 1Password on but I need to know if one 1Password Mac + Windows Bundle will be ok.
Me = iMac, iPad and iPhone
My wife = Windows PC (sometimes my iMac under her own login account), iPad and iPhone
.... and kids when they need to save their passwords.
When running with the two of us on split PC's/Devices, can we have our own vaults under 1Password Mac + Windows Bundle?
Please can you confirm this is possible?
Thank you,
Damian

Hi @D_Lewis (Damian),
Our licences are per platform but will allow you to be used on many machines by up to five other family members.
So a single Mac & Windows bundle will cover you and your wife on your iMac and your wife's PC. It would actually cover as many other Macs and PCs as you want too.
1Password for iOS is a different platform though I'm afraid. Now 1Password 5 for iOS is free to download with an in-app purchase for certain additional features. The purchase is per Apple ID, that's how it works with iOS but it covers all the devices that a single Apple ID is used on.
Now our licence is about running 1Password and is completely unrelated to the concept of vaults. Here you can all keep your own vaults, you can share a single vault or you can mix the two for personal and shared vaults. This is entirely up to how you want to set things up and we can help you once you have a better idea of how you would like things.
The tricky/messy bit comes into if you have strong preferences over syncing methods. If you wife wants a vault synced between her Windows machine and her Mac user account then the easiest way forward is Dropbox due to it being very platform agnostic. Dropbox, if acceptable will cover Mac, Windows and iOS (as well as others).
If you have a strong desire for iCloud Sync though that's where things get a little more complicated. iCloud support in 1Password 5 is supplied by Apple's CloudKit framework and for an application to use this framework it must have been purchased from one of Apple's stores. Now all iOS apps come from iTunes so they automatically meet the requirements. 1Password for Mac though can be purchased directly from our web store or from Apple's Mac App Store (MAS). If you desire iCloud Sync you have to purchase the MAS version. Now we will help you purchase the Windows version at a discounted price so that between the two you get the same bundle deal so you won't lose out on the discount. My final remark on this is that your wife won't be able to use iCloud Sync though if she wants the Windows machine involved as no windows application can access the CloudKit framework.
You may have a few follow up questions after all of that so please do feel free to ask before you commit to a purchase. I would also point out that both the Mac and Windows version from our store have a 30 day trial so you can try it out before you make your decision. If you try it and do want iCloud Sync support that isn't a problem either as the MAS version will find the vault from the trial and import it.

Hi littlebobbytables,
That just the information I was looking for. Thank you.
I'm guessing that if I take iCloud Sync out of the equation, then I can use my Dropbox for my iMac and idevices, with my wife's Dropbox for her Windows PC and idevices? That way I don't have all my eggs in one (iCloud) basket!
All our devices are under a 'family sharing' account, so that seems straight forward, since each device would link up to their respective Dropbox accounts.
If you could confirm is this is workable, then I can look at progressing this.
Regards,
Damian

Hi @D_Lewis,
You are correct. When it comes to Dropbox you can each have your own Dropbox account and use that to sync only your devices. With Dropbox you can share a secondary vault between two or more Dropbox accounts so everybody can see a shared vault or for those wishing to keep things really simple they can share a single primary vault over one Dropbox account. Really Dropbox is versatile enough to meet most needs.
The only thing it can't do is let you log into two personal Dropbox accounts from a single user account in OS X. That's its one limitation. As I say, folder sharing in Dropbox though should mean that isn't an issue. All 1Password will know is you've connected to a Dropbox account, it doesn't limit you to using one over multiple machines or anything like that - we make use of Dropbox but they are still very separate.
If we can help any more please do ask
