App purchase problem - HELP!

I am a happy user of 1Password for Mac, for Windows and for iOS.  My problem is with the Apple AppStore’s understanding of your products.

I originally purchased 1PW from the Apple Store in Aug 2013 for use on my iPhone. Recently, I lost both my working copy and my backup. As a result, a few days ago I downloaded what I assumed was a simple replacement from the Apple Store. No surprise, it works precisely as the previous lost copy worked.

The issue is that Apple insists that I pay full price for the replacement because they assert my original download was designed for Mac computers whereas the second was designed for the iPhone/iPad and, thus, are different products. This makes no sense to me at all.  Given that that the first purchase occurred 18 months ago, I want to avoid an “I say-you say” response if at all possible. How best can I provide Apple evidence that neither app download was a Mac OS X application?

  • Hi @jik,

1Password for Mac and 1Password for iOS are in fact separate purchases, so it sounds as though Apple does understand correctly. If I've misunderstood please let me know as I'm not entirely sure I'm clear on your issue.

    Thanks.

    Hi Ben,
Thank you for answering so promptly, but you did misunderstand (more likely, I didn't explain myself adequately) and the "misunderstanding" is the essence of my problem. Both my original purchase and my current download work perfectly as iPhone apps. Clearly then, according to your response, neither one could be a Mac application. How do I convince Apple that is the case? A thought - I am unaware that that AgileBits has ever marketed 1PW for Mac via the Apple AppStore. If that is, in fact, the case, how can I prove it?

AgileBits does, in fact, market 1Password for Mac through the Mac App Store, as well as through their own web site. They also market, separately, the iOS application on the other App Store, for iOS applications only. It isn't clear to me whether you have an installation on a Mac or not. If you only have the application on iOS devices, it sounds possible to me that there is some confusion about which store is at issue. Apple has not done users any favor by running to entirely different software store and calling both of them App Store.

Thank you. You have clarified one source of confusion. Am I on firm ground in asserting that both my AppStore downloads must be iOS since they both work on my iPhone? Parenthetically, I do have the Mac version also which I purchased from AgileBits.

Also, saying that you downloaded and that Apple insists that you pay is a bit confusing. Did you download without paying? You shouldn't be able to download without paying first unless the app is free.

In fact, 1PW for iOS is now free with an in-app purchase for extra features. The extra features would also be free if you had a suitable earlier purchase.

  • Hi @jik,

This part of your post concerns me:

The issue is that Apple insists that I pay full price for the replacement because they assert my original download was designed for Mac computers whereas the second was designed for the iPhone/iPad and, thus, are different products.

Where is Apple insisting this? In an email? You said you already downloaded it and it works, so where did you get this demand for payment?

Apple will email a receipt after purchasing, but not after re-downloading. And they'll never send demand for payment.
