Confused About Updating
1. SUMMARY
I have 1Password on my MacBook Air & my iPhone (which I sync via Dropbox). I tried to update these, but that didn't seem to work, and now I am confused, as described below.
Before I go any further, I might note that I'm pretty pathetic when it comes to technology (at least that is what my kids tell me), and I apologize for bothering you with something that I probably should have been able to figure out on my own. (I tried & failed.)
2. MY DEVICES
The details on my devices are as follows:
(a) MacBook Air (Mid 2012)
* 1Password Version: 3.8.21 (Purchased Family License in July 2012)
* OS: 10.9.5
(b) iPhone 6 (2015)
* 1Password Version: 5.2 (I think)
* iOS: 8.1.3
3. DISCUSSION OF ISSUE
On my Macbook, a dialog box pops up periodically suggesting that I should update my 1Password to Version 3.8.22 (build #32010), and that this would be a free update. I tried to do this update several times by clicking the "Install Update" button in the dialog box, but each time I got an error message saying: "An error occurred while extracting the archive. Please try again."
Since I couldn't update via the dialog box, I tried to download the update from the AgileBits website. Not sure exactly what I did, but instead of getting version 3.8.22, I ended up with a trial version of 1Password 4.4.3. I also got a message saying that I would eventually need to pay something if I wanted to keep it fully functional; however I couldn't find anything about how to make such payment or what it would cost.
Also, I expected that downloading the newer version would update the 1Password application already on my MacBook. Instead, I think it simply created another application. So now I appear to be running two separate versions of 1Password on my Mac: Version 3.8.21 and Version 4.4.3.
4. QUESTION
My question is what should I do now? I would like to have just one version of 1Password on my Macbook. In addition, I would like this version to be reasonably up-to-date (I gather that I can't use version 5, since my Macbook is not yet on Yosemite) and to continue to sync with my iPhone.
Thanks!!!
PS.
I will send a duplicate copy of this message via email, along with diagnostic reports from my MacBook and iPhone, in case those are helpful.

Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed outline of your situation here! There's no need to apologize - we've heard this question before (which means we'll need to work on simplifying this process for our users in the future!) We'll have you sorted out in no time.
First: a bit of explanation
Version 3.8.22 is indeed a free update for 1Password 3, however, if you run into that annoying error message and have to go looking for a fresh copy, 1Password 3 is hiding near the bottom of that downloads page under 'Legacy' versions. (I don't blame you for not finding it.)

Well, the upgrade from 1Password 3 to 1Password 4 is a paid upgrade, but as an owner of 1Password 3, you get a nice discount when you purchase an upgrade. Simply enter your existing license information on our upgrade page to see the price of a shiny new license. It will show as a purchase of 1Password 5, but the license file you'll receive in your confirmation of purchase email works for both version 4 and version 5.
Once you've upgraded, you're welcome to uninstall 1Password 3. They can continue to share space in your /Applications folder without getting in each others' way, but there's no need to keep version 3 around if you're only going to use version 4. To remove 1Password 3, simply drag the app to the Trash. Please don't use any app cleaners, as they can get a bit overzealous and try to remove your backups or your datafile in addition to the app, and we really don't want that.
As far as syncing goes, 1Password 5 for iOS will sync beautifully with 1Password 4 for Mac via Dropbox.
I hope this helps, but we're here if you have any further questions or concerns! :)
