iTunes backup doesn't work?

Yesterday, I got a new phone (iPhone 6 Plus). Having backed up and cleared my old 5s using a cable connection and iTunes on my MacBook Pro, I set up the new phone using the backup just made of the 5s, only to find out that 1Password now starts up as if I'm a new user.... I can either start a new vault or sync using any of 3 methods but not iTunes?? Are all my passwords gone now? Any suggestions much appreciated.

I have the exact same question because the only backup I have is my iPhone backup using iTunes. I purchased a new iPhone yesterday exact same iPhone same version iOS8. I had successfully completed a full backup an hour before the purchase. When I restored to the new phone form iTunes I noticed that 1Password was not restored. All of my other apps, photos, settings restored perfectly, just no 1Password. How can I restore 1Password from my Mac iTunes full iPhone backup?

    Hi @ReinieR & @jesterchris,

I apologise for taking so long in responding to your requests for assistance.

If you're both saying that you have no other source of your vault other than an iTunes backup where the vault wasn't restored... There is one more thing we can try but just to warn you, given it should be been restored it may be something went wrong when iTunes created the backup.

We'll have to hope my concerns are unwarranted and that this will yield some joy.

I would like both of you to download a copy of http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/. Don't worry, the trial is enough for your needs.

Using iExplorer you will want to open your iTunes backup and then you're looking for the following, AppDomainGroup-group.com.agilebits.onepassword and specifically a folder titled Data inside there. This screenshot should help

If you can copy that folder to your Mac then we have hope.

If you do find that folder please post back here and we'll take it from there. If for whatever reason that does not exist then for reasons unknown iTunes didn't create a full backup despite its claims.

I hope you will both be posting back asking what to do with the data folder. Fingers crossed!

Hi littlebobbytabels, Thank you for the reply, I was able to download iExplorer and find the directory structure in the image above! My fingers are crossed too. ~C

Bwoodruff stated in another post "My understanding is that standard iTunes backups do not back up 1Password's data, just the app itself.". I do not see the blob files, I only see the OnePassword.sqlite file so I'm thinking I do not have the data in my iTunes backup but I still have a tiny bit of hope.

  • Hi @jesterchris ,

First, copy that folder to your Mac, just in case.

Then, this may seem odd, but try the restore again. I've had instances where everything doesn't restore the first time. An additional restore worked. Let me know if that works or not.

Thank you hayesk, is there a specific location I should copy the folder to? Also are you saying to perform an iTunes restore and start over again once the folder is on my Mac in the correct location? ~C

    Hi @jesterchris,

I do apologise, you've not been receiving very prompt assistance here. I've bookmarked this thread so I'll be notified if you reply.

If you say using iExplorer allowed you to discover a Data directory with a OnePassword.sqlite file inside that is promising, that's the exact filetype we use to store your vault.

Please copy the entire Data folder to pretty much anywhere you consider safe. Your Desktop for example is perfectly acceptable for storing this.

Once you've copied it to your desktop then depending on what you've done with your phone since you created this restore point you're free to try restoring it again to your device to see if restoring a second time works any better than the first. Now if you're like me and keep your SMS and iMessages this may not be ideal and you're hoping for an alternative.

If you don't own and use 1Password for Mac do the following.

    1. Download a copy of 1Password for Mac from our AgileBits Download page. The trial version will be enough for your needs. If you're running Yosemite you can download 1Password 5, if you're running Mavericks or Mountain Lion you can download 1Password 4 from our Legacy section at the bottom of the page.
    2. Create a new vault by following our Running 1Password for the first time. Don't worry about a strong password, we're going to be replacing this vault with the one we've hopefully recovered from the backup of your iOS device.
    3. With 1Password still open, close it using the ⌃⌘Q keyboard shortcut.
    4. Open a Finder window and use the ⇧⌘G keyboard shortcut to open the Go to Folder window and paste in the following path ~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/Data/.
    5. Move the contents (not the entire folder) to your Trash. Now copy the contents of the Data folder you copied from the backup into this folder. So all going well you should now have at least a OnePassword.sqlite file in here.
    6. Just to make sure caching isn't an issue reboot your Mac. This probably isn't required but why take the chance given you're probably stressed enough as it is.
    7. Open up 1Password for Mac. It should require the Master Password that you used on your iOS device and it should contain the contents of your iOS vault.

If this is the case the worrying part is over. All we need to do is then get this vault back onto your iOS device but that's the easy bit after worrying that the vault was gone.

    1. Enter 1Password's preferences and switch to the Backup tab. Click on the Backup Now button followed by the Show Files button. Copy the backup file you just made to your Desktop.
    2. You will now want to follow the section titled Restoring a Manual Backup in our guide, iTunes Backups.

If you have any questions, any concerns or doubts please do ask. When you post I'll be notified that you have rather than this delay again and I do apologise for that.

Hi @littlebobbytabels, Thank you for the reply, you can mark this one as resolved! I was able to retrieve my passwords successfully. I greatly appreciate all of the responses I received on this forum. Know that this was a big win for AgileBits and 1Password. I am proud to be a user and supporter of this product. Thank you so much littlebobbytabels, Bwoodruff, and hayesk for outstanding support. ~C

That's great news @jesterchris, I'm really happy to hear everything hasn't been lost. That's my biggest fear when working to help all the people that put their trust in 1Password. I dread the ones where you just can't see a way forward for whatever reason.

Going forward you may want to make the occasional backup of your vault and use iTunes so a copy is somewhere safe and under your control if using the iTunes backup is going to scare us like that. Before a big iOS update or change of device would cover you for this event should it ever happen again. I was always a 1Password for Mac user originally so I've never been as worried myself. My vault is on my iOS device, my Mac and my Time Machine backup. I've seen approaches with more redundancy but I feel reasonably safe with what I have.

That's not to say you need 1Password for Mac though. Say you have an automated system for backing up your documents, if you use the iTunes Backup guide to keep a reasonably up-to-date copy of the backup from 1Password for iOS then you're equally as safe as I, you'd need your iOS device, your computer and the backup to all become unusable at the same time.

Hopefully your new iPhone will behave going forward - no more blips!

Should you ever need us though we'll be here
