1Password PRO support Synology cloud station folders on IOS 8?

Would like to sync 3 vaults from my Mac 1password to 3 different iPhone 6 1Password PRO i.e - vault 1 unique to user 1 on an iPhone device and vault 2 unique to user 2 etc. Each user should not be able to see any other vaults other than his own. I run into issues with Wi-Fi syncs - all vaults become visible to all IOS users without privacy!!. I know you can do this via Dropbox synching but I absolutely don't want to use dropbox. However, i have Synology Cloud station and I can create shared folders and synch between my iOS device and Mac. Does 1password Pro on IOS support Synology cloud station instead of dropbox ?. Can you offer me a solution?. If not, would MAC version of IOS 1Password PRO (iCloud) support such features - maintaining privacy of different vaults on different IOS devices ? ( iCloud would be my other option although I much rather prefer SYNOLOGY solution).

I can't answer your other questions, but I can tell you that so far, you can only sync a primary vault via iCloud, and you can't share vaults over iCloud because Apple only permits access to users with the same Apple ID.

    Hi @RajRajendran,

I assume that none of these iOS user also use either their own Mac or have an account on your Mac?

Unfortunately with iOS we don't support anything outside of the two main cloud services, iCloud & Dropbox and then Wi-Fi Sync. For the moment those are the only options.

If you want all three syncing to a single copy of 1Password on your Mac, with individual iOS devices for each vault then sorry, Dropbox is your only route at the moment.

It would be great if you could add Synology Cloudstation for 1Password sync. I think many people wan't to store critical data even if there strong encrypted in there local cloud. Sharing 1Password vaults with OS X and Cloudstation works great, would be very cool if it would do the same in iOS app!

  • Thanks for the feedback! We are definitely looking into additional sync methods for the future.

Adding Synology Cloudstation would be a very good addition to your already excellent OS X software. Please put this high on the list.

  • Thanks for the vote, @sjgwinn.

    Hi @ribero,

I have many iOS 8 application that were not specifically designed to work with Synology Cloud Station but thanks to iOS 8 are able to load and save on it. Why not 1password ?

In order to support Synology, we would need to implement the API within the iOS app.

Adding any sort of sync solution to 1Password is a big decision, primarily because we offer 1Password on so many platforms. We're always looking for a secure and flexible solution to add as an option for our users, but we do require a lot from a sync solution in order for it to be 'right' for us. I'd be happy to let our team know that you'd appreciate seeing Synology considered. :)

  • not using Synology API which is, by the way, not officially available and documented

Then we definitely can't do it. More on that below.

Just a recent example : Pixelmator for iOS is able to load and save files directly to Synology Cloud Station without even officialy supporting this cloud based storage provider. Pixelmator is not using any specific Synology API because there are no API avaialable from Synology but instead they rely on iOS storage provider API.

Pixelmator works with image files. Saving and opening a file is very much different than working from a database, which is what 1Password needs to do.

May be this is not applicable in 1password context ?

Yes, I think basically this is the short answer.

I'm just trying to understand if there is a chance that this kind of cloud based storage solution will land in a short time as I do not want to rely on external cloud solution (icloud or even worth dropbox).

I'll be frank: depending on what you define as a "short time," it is very unlikely.

So, when you say you need to implement Synology API to integrate it to 1password and when one knows that there are no API available from Synology it is clear that you did not even evaluated this option seriously. It's just a polite answer (thanks !) but now i would prefer a clear yes or no.

An API that is accessible cross platform is a requirement to be considered as a serious solution for 1Password syncing.

So I guess that makes it a no, for now. It simply wouldn't offer the feature set we need without an API.

  • From what I understand from your answer, 1password technical requirements will probably disqualify a WebDAV approach...

    As things stand, yes.

We did at one point attempt to implement a WebDAV based sync and the performance was too poor to be considered for inclusion in a release of the product.

@bwoodruff I would be more happy with slow sync than no sync. Is there still blocker why it is not possible to add WebDav or Synology Cloud station client support? Thanks! :-)

  • @honzakuchar

One of our co-founders, Dave, responded to this question here:

[Feature Request] Sync any location (or add support for Owncloud) - AgileBits Support Forum

The short answer is that we are not considering investing development resources into WebDAV at this point, but if the landscape changes in the future we could certainly re-evaluate based on those changes.

+1 for direct support for Synology. Not certain if Ribero was accurate in saying there was no API level support.
    https://www.synology.com/#tool

Feels to me like there is plenty of support here for developers to integrate directly with Synology by building packages. I would pay for this privilege.

@imjammo: Thanks for adding your +1!

    @ribero:

And to be honest I give up listening the politicaly corect answer of agilebits "we love hearing suggestion of our customer" but not implementing them.

I totally understand your sentiment here! We really do love hearing from our customers and we take your suggestions seriously--it's the only way 1Password is going to get better over time. Having said that, it's simply not possible for us to include every feature every customer wants. We do our best to balance security, ease of use, and awesome functionality for power users; however, those three things are at odds sometimes. We don't always get it exactly right, but we always try :)

Thanks so much for your passion and for letting us know what new features you'd like to see!
