How long can the Master Password be?

What is the maximum length that the Master Password can be? I updated my Master Password but when I tried to use it for the first time, I seem to have run out of space. As I type in the password, the cursor moves from left to right adding a dot for each character until it reaches the end of the available space. Then no more dots are added. I still however have a few more characters of my Master Password to enter. I try to enter the characters but 1Password says my Master Password is incorrect. Is it possible that my Master Password is too long?

Regardless of the fact you can't see the dots your master password should still type: it's a cosmetic issue. I don't believe there's any realistic limit to the length of a master password (taking into consideration the need actually to remember it, of course!).

Edit: What happens if you type your master password into a plain text note and then copy and paste it into 1P. Does that work?

    Hi @Bruce In Iloilo,

Stephen is correct, this is just a cosmetic issue - you aren't limited to how many characters you can enter in the master password field, and the characters you type are all entered even if it looks like they're not. It might help if you don't look at the screen when typing your master password, if that's causing some confusion.

If you believe you're entering the correct master password but 1Password won't unlock, try Stephen's suggestion to type your master password in a plain text file/note, then copy & paste it into 1Password. Does it work? If not, you can find some tips on this page which might help.

If you're still having trouble with that, please let us know. Thanks!

    Thank you for the info.

Thank you too about the tip of cutting-and-pasting. Unfortunately that didn't help. I think that I will have to start over from the beginning, but since that was only a few days ago, there are only a few passwords that I need to redo. I suspect that I mistyped when I entered the Master Password.

I'm sorry for the trouble. However, if you need to start over there's a useful knowledgebase article here which will guide you. It's important you follow that procedure carefully.

Thanks. I look through all the articles. I tried restoring from both Time Machine and from the 1Password back-up but there was no difference. it did get me back to my old Master Password but the items that I entered since I changed the Master Password was lost. Luckily there were not too many of them. They are easily reset, relatively. Lesson learned: Double-check the spelling and typing of the Master Password.

I'm sorry to hear you've had to reset a few passwords over this @Bruce In Iloilo but glad to hear you seem to back on track now. Let us know if you have any more issues!
