Attachments from Mac app not showing in iOS app

I currently use the most recent versions of 1P on both my Mac and my iOS devices. When I attach a photo using the Mac app, it shows on my Mac but on the iOS device, I see the title of the attachment, but when I attempt to view it, I simply see a gray screen with the name and type of attachment. I am attempting to get s copy of my drivers license to my iOS device but having no luck.

  • Hi @sdcga161,

What file type is the attachment in question? iOS is much more limited on the types of files it can view/open than Mac is.

@sdcga161, @kclarke2000: Sorry for the trouble, folks!

I tested this myself by creating two new items on my Yosemite machine with JPEG and XLS attachments. Obviously the XLS was not viewable in 1Password 5.2.1 on my iPhone 6 (iOS 8.2), but it showed the file information -- and of course the JPEG was viewable.

I used a Secure Note in both cases, as there have been bugs with these in the past. What type of item(s) are your files attached to, and what are their file sizes? I also happen to have my auto insurance information in 1Password (as a membership item) with PDFs of the actual documentation attached, and the files show the standard OS X Preview/PDF icon and are viewable within 1Password. Are you certain you are not attaching links of the files as opposed to the files themselves? Please let me know so we can get this sorted out for you. :)

I tried a secure note and that worked ok. I can see it on my iOS device. Now I'll try again with log in and see what happens.

@sdcga161: Thanks for the update! Be sure to keep us posted, and if it is a particular item type that seems to be the culprit so we can investigate further.

I think I'm having the same issue. I can post a new discussion if you like. Here is my issue:
How can I view attachments that were added to my mac on my iPhone 6 plus?

    Mac OS X 10.9.5
    1Password 4
    Version 4.4.3

    iPhone 6 plus
    iOS 8.2
    1Password version 5.2.1
    Pro is purchased.

I use Wifi sync. I have generated a new secret and paired my iPhone to the mac with the new secret.
I created a new test login on my mac and attached a .pdf to the test login. I sync’d over wifi and the new login is added to my iPhone, but the attachment is not there. There is no list of attachments or filename. Pro says you can view attachments but I just can't figure out how to do it and I don't see anything in the guides or KB.

    I've attached some screenshots.
    Any help please?

@javidavi: That is puzzling, to be sure. Does the attachment appear in the item on your Mac, and is it viewable? What is the size of the PDF? I actually had some trouble finding one that came in under the 5MB attachment size limit that I didn't already have in 1Password.

I tested this with both Dropbox and WiFi Sync, just to be sure it wasn't a data issue, but in both cases the item transferred and contained my viewable 3MB PDF. I will add, however, that I tested this using 1Password 5 on both platforms, since I am running OS X Yosemite. Are you getting any errors when you sync, and do the item counts match between the two devices? Please let me know. We will get this sorted out for you!

@brenty : Thanks for the reply.
    In response to your questions:
On my mac, I am able to open and view the attachment on the test login.
    The PDF file is 627kb.
I am not getting any pop up errors and I have not seen any errors anywhere. I'm not really sure where to go looking for error(codes/messages) so what I mean is that no errors are obvious.
My mac shows 85 items and my iphone shows 85 items.

Let me know what else you could use to help troubleshoot.

    Regards!

@javidavi: Sometimes you will have an error message pop up during the sync'ing process if something goes wrong, so I just wanted to double check.

Others have reported attachments not showing up in the iOS app, and so far the common element seems to be WiFi Sync.

Would you be willing to generate a report so send us (in 1Password Settings > Advanced > Diagnostics > Send Diagnostics)? If there is a bug that is affecting you and others, it might help us to track it down. Using Send Diagnostics will attach the report to an email. Please also include a link to this forum thread so we can 'connect the dots' quickly and get this sorted out for you. Thanks!

Just to follow up on this so anyone else might see this.

In the case of @javidavi he's using 1Password 4.4.3 on his Mac and Wifi syncing to 1Password 5.2.1 on iOS. This will sync items, but it will not sync attachments. Attachment sync via Wifi wasn't added in until 1Password 5 (iOS and Mac).

In this case, he's also using the latest version for Mavericks, so he'd have to upgrade to Yosemite to use 1Password 5, which is a free upgrade for all version 4 users.

Hope that helps anyone who might stumble on this looking for help :)

@AGKyle Thanks for the information. I wish it was a different answer, but I understand.
I'm not ready to upgrade to Yosemite yet, so I will do without attachments in 1Password until then.
    Thanks!

  • Thanks for the update, @javidavi. :)

@javidavi I am using iCloud sync on the mac and the IOS device, all software is the latest version 5.2.1 IOS and 5.1 Mac. I have secure docs on the mac in on the iOS device they just show the name and not the attachment. It happens to both spreadsheets and jpg, file sizes are not more than 1 mb

@kclarke2000: I'm sorry to hear that! Do you not see the file attachment showing up in the item details at all?

Just to be clear, in 1Password for iOS you will see the file attachment (just above "Add to Favorites") with an icon to the left. You can tap on either the icon or the filename to open it (provided that it is a support format).

If you create a new item with an attachment, does that sync? Do you have any attachments that do? Also check out our iCloud troubleshooting guide. I hope this helps! Please let me know what you find.

@brenty If I add new items, it is working fine, old items that used to work and were synced are now broken. This is an old problem and I have been dealing with it for a long time, it gets fixed and then broken in later releases.

@kclarke2000: While it is hard to say for certain without more information or being able to test them myself, in my experience what happens is that websites change over time. A login item I created a few years ago would work fine until the website changed their login form (sometimes in the process of redesigning the whole site, but not necessarily). So 1Password is trying to interact with a website's login form based on outdated information.

In most cases, simply re-saving the login will usually get it working. 1Password on the desktop (Mac or Windows) is best for this purpose, since 1Password will save information about the current login form, and then it will know how to better fill it going forward. Of course occasionally a website will change in such a way that prevents 1Password from interacting it at all (e.g. using scripting to prevent automated filling).

1Password's login filling has improved greatly over the years, but it can certainly be frustrating when a website changes and it becomes necessary to create an updated login item for it. And if you do find a site which 1Password was able to fill in the past but does not seem to be able to now, just let us know so we can see what can be done to get it working for you. :)

@brenty I am not having an issue with websites, I am using secure notes and other categories to store documents from my desktop to be seen on my IOS devices. If I create a new secure note, it shows up on my IOS device, if I try to access one that I made before the transition to a later release of the software (not sure if the desktop or IOS device is breaking it) just the name will show up. See the photos. Here are two that used to work but now don't, if I build new ones they may or may not continue to work, I have been seeing this issue for a couple of years. Hoping you have a handle on how to fix it, building new files each time the software is upgraded is not a solution.

@kclarke2000: Sorry, I misunderstood when you said that items that were working are now broken! Thank you very much for the screenshot. I can see what you mean now. That is definitely different than what I am seeing with my attachments! We just haven't changed anything with the format -- or iCloud sync: we can't, since that is Apple's service -- which would account for things getting 'broken in later releases'. :/

As I mentioned before, sometimes things go wrong when sync'ing and these troubleshooting steps can help. Did you have any luck with that, or receive any errors that might help shed some light on things? Specifically in your case it sounds like resetting iCloud sync data might do the trick, as -- if I understand correctly -- the attachments are showing up on your Mac. Clearing the data from iCloud and then sync'ing it again 'from scratch' will give you all fresh data...and it seems like it's the newly created items that aren't giving you any trouble. Please let me know your results!
