Can I upgrade to 1pw6/mac if I use 1pw3/ios5 ?

Right now I am using the following:

1pw 3.8.22 on a macbook pro (Yosemite, latest)
and
1pwPro 3.7.2 on a iPod touch 3rd gen with iOS5 (iPod touch is old, cannot upgrade to iOS6/7/8)

My question is: if I upgrade to 1pw6 on my mac, can I continue to use my iPod touch, presumably with 1pwPro 3.7.2, and still have the two working together (sync, etc.) ?

Thanks !

@Naz - What method are you using to sync your current installations? The answer to that will affect the answer. I'm not certain I can answer your question myself, but I am sure that the answer will depend on how you sync.

Also, just to be sure there isn't some misunderstanding, the latest version of 1Password for Mac is version 5, not 6.

@Hawkmoth - Thanks for correcting me on 1pwd's latest version (5). I sync via dropbox.

Dropbox syncing for iOS version 3 was broken when Dropbox changed their API about a year and a half ago. Are you sure your data on your Mac and iPod touch are completely synchronized? Dropbox sync should still work for your Mac, since the Mac version uses the Dropbox application, instead of the API, but the iOS version, to the best of my knowledge, shouldn't be syncing there anymore.

@hawkmoth You are correct again ! I used to sync via Dropbox and must have switched to wifi-sync a while ago, probably when I realized dropbox sync was broken.

The WiFi sync protocols were completely redone when 1Password 5 was written. If you upgrade your Mac to that version, I don't think you'll be able to sync to your iPod touch at all.

Would it be an option to run 1pw5 and keep 1pw3 just for the purpose of syncing?

  • It isn't impossible, but not very convenient in my estimation. 1Password 3 for iOS was discontinued over 2 years ago. It might be time to consider a new iPod. :)

@bwoodruff @hawkmoth Humm, expensive upgrade the iPod is :)

I just gave it a try with the 1pw5 demo and it seems to work. I can put up with some inconvenience (quitting 1pw5 and 1pw5mini in order to lauch 1pw3 and sync my iPod touch) and delay replacing my iPod Touch which works fine for me. Can I assume that sharing the same 1Password.agilekeychain as well as various preference files for both versions is perfecly fine? If so it will be a Go :)

  • Hi @Naz,

Sharing the 1Password.agilekeychain file shouldn't be a problem as long as you're careful about quitting one before launching the other. They actually store their preferences separately, so that isn't an issue either. :)

@bwoodruff Hum, actually yes ! I seem to have lost the cmd-\ shortcut both on Firefox (latest) and Safari (latest). I did remove the older 1pw extensions, installed the new ones and they appear and work in both Firefox and Safari but the shortcut does not work. I tried rebooting, restarting the browsers and refreshing firefox, that does not help. Any suggestion ?

  • Hi @Naz,

Please be sure 1Password 5's mini is running, otherwise you will not have keyboard shortcuts.

    Thanks!

@bwoodruff Yes, 1pw5mini is running and unlocked, still no shortcut for both firefox and safari.

Doh ! I just noticed that cmd-/ had for some reason been remapped to cmd-À ! So I just went back to the preferences and now it is working!

  • Excellent. Thanks for the update! :)
