Catch 22 RE: ITunes and 1Password on iOS

For some reason Apple at times will request you to re-enter your password for your iTunes account on your iPhone. All applications you have on the iPhone that came through iTunes will have a dialog box appear as you try to open them that asks you to enter your iTunes password for your iTunes Account. If you have taken advantage of the beauty of 1Password and have long complex passwords unique to each account (that you have not memorized) then you may find yourself unable to use your iPhone for anything other than voice, email, or any other program that didn't come pre loaded on your iPhone.
What happens is a classic catch 22. You need your iTunes password which is stored in 1password -but you will not be allowed to open 1Password until you enter your iTunes password as required in the ever present dialog box.

This needs to be fixed!!

    Hi @Chickenman26,

I haven't had that happen to me yet. Is there anything unique about your iTunes account at all? For example, do you swap between two Apple IDs on your iOS device at all or is the IOS device stuck in a loop where it's flagged 1Password as downloading a new version but won't proceed without the Apple ID password? That last one could be identified (I think) by checking out the 1Password icon, is it much darker than usual?

I can certainly see how that would be an issue although if iOS is refusing to let you load any application I'm unsure how we could do anything to help. Obviously we'd love to but iOS is very restricted and we can't do anything unless we can load.

I myself rely on 1Password for my Apple ID password so I do routinely run into having to cancel purchases to pop over and grab my password before starting the process once more. This isn't quite the same though as I've never experienced what you are right now. Certainly I can understand why it is extremely frustrating.

More accurate to say that the aps appear to open - such as 1Password startup screen appears but the dialog box requesting for me to enter my iTunes Password immediately appears and you can either choose to enter your password or "cancel". Cancel closes the dialog box -and also immediately closes 1password.
Nothing new or different with my iTunes account.
Apple support suggested I contact 1password to resolve - apple not of any help. Did say that they do ask for users to enter their password from time to time.

I was able to gain access to my 1password database by having friend go to my home computer and access 1passwod and get the iTunes password. I am currently two time zones from there. Traveling with just the iPhone.

If that happens to me, as it does on occasion, I simply cancel whatever app (usually App Store) is asking for my Apple password, open 1P, copy the password and re-open the original app and start again doing what I was doing when the password was requested. Of course it's a little bit of a hassle but I'd rather have a complex Apple ID password and do that than have an insecure password.

Some people have recommended a Diceware password for your Apple ID as it's secure and easier to remember.

  • Hi @Chickenman ,

I don't see that happen very often. Do you sign in and out of the App Store on your iPhone a lot? If so, if 1Password asks for your AppleID, make sure you are signed into the App Store first. Note that 1Password is not putting that alert on the screen. This is iOS trying to validate the app. I'm not sure why it would do this; more than once, anyway.

I use diceware to create my Apple ID and Dropbox passwords. That way they are easy to remember.

So for me I am really using 3Password rather than 1Password.

    @danco: :)

@Chickenman26: As it happens, I had a similar issue today on my Mac. Man, can that be a headache sometimes! I concur with the suggestions here.

I did also want to add that there was a similar discussion in the Lounge, in case there are some ideas there that you might also find useful. Cheers! :)
