Why so many backups?

1Password has a large number of backups dating back at 18 months or so. Wouldn't a couple of recent ones be sufficient?

    Hi @RickCunn,

I'd say it's hard to know in advance if/when backups may become vital for recovery of a particular item. Now it might be you will never need that many backups or indeed need them at all but I'd go with the old adage that it's better to be safe than sorry. Of course it may depend on your drive's capacity and the size of your vault as to whether they seem to be taking up a lot of space and that can be a factor. Now we don't indiscriminately backup but instead will check on a daily basis to see if your vault has changed since the last backup. If it hasn't changed we won't create a new backup as there isn't any gain from doing so. So once a vault is populated and settles down you shouldn't be seeing new backups every day if you're just filling in Logins.

If you feel you have too many though you can safely delete older ones. In 1Password's preferences, in the Backup tab you will see a Show Files button. If you click that it will open a Finder window in the relevant folder. From there you can drag backups to the Trash if you want and they will disappear from 1Password's list when you next restart it.

If you have any further questions please do ask.
