Can't choose a folder for folder sync + getting connection error again and again [moved to email]

Hi support team,

we used a network folder to sync passwords in our team.
The server adress changed from "old.local" to "new.local" now.

I tried to change the folder sync to our new server address, but
unfortunately it is not possible to choose a new folder destination.

I'm always getting those error messages again and again.
"Beim Verbinden mit dem Server "new.local" ist ein Fehler aufgetreten"
When disabling 1Password the error messages are gone.
What's wrong here?

Thanks in advance.

Micha

Have you seen this knowledge base article about folder sync? It's not recommended to sync with a network volume but only with a folder on a local or removable drive. The whole affair is explained better than I can in the article to which I've linked.

    Hello Stephen,

thank you for your fast response.
Yes, I've seen this article but unfortunately I am not able to configure
my folder sync to a new, local folder because of this repeating error message.

    Please see here: https://loft48.s3.amazonaws.com/1password-error-server.mp4

    What can I do?

    Thank you

Oh, sorry about that! What's your exact version of 1P (go to 1P > About 1Password and tell us exactly what it says there)?

You might try rebooting your computer to see if that fixes the problem. I mention it only because I've just had an odd problem and a reboot fixed it.

I'm sorry but apart from that I'm out of ideas and we'll have to wait for an expert if that doesn't help.

    Hi Stephen,

no, unfortunately a resboot didn't solve this.
I am using version 5.1 (510027) from the Mac App Store.

The weird thing is, even if 1P is closed this repeating error message does show up again and again.
But it has definitely something to do with 1P, becaus it starts when starting 1P. ;)

    Thanks

    Micha

Sorry, I've been thinking about this again. My German is not so good these days but (I hope you don't mind) I've taken a screen shot of your error message to include here:

It sounds to me from that as though you're not actually setting up a folder on your machine for folder sync (because you're still getting an error message about the server, in some form).

Edit: sorry, I guess the point is that 1P won't let you change the folder because the error keeps popping up! I'm not sure of the way forward but will ping @Megan from AgileBits who may still be here.

Edit 2: Is it possible to re-create the original server address, maybe? You should then be able to change the folder without the error message because 1P will be able to connect to the old address.

    Hi Stephen,

    thanks for your reply.
Good Idea, I've re-created the old server address but unfortunately it was not possible to create
the exact same folder structure from the base. :(
I've got a repeating error messages again, this time another one.

It's still not possible to change my folder. Maybe there is a way to reset the folder setting in a configuration file?

    Thank you
    Micha

@loft, Micha I'm so sorry but I've run out of ideas: this is way beyond my expertise (which is limited!). I hope you don't mind, but I'll have to leave this for someone from AgileBits. That may mean a wait because many of them are asleep now in the US and Canada. I'm sorry not to be more help. Don't despair: someone will come along with a solution for you!

Micha, sorry support has been very busy the last few days but I've asked if someone can take a look at this for you. Sorry for the delay.

I had some folder sync issues recently, that turned out to be my problem. Two pieces of data were useful in discovering the issue:

    1. Exactly which folders are you syncing? (in my case I was incorrectly also syncing the private AgileBits folder that contained the DB).
    2. What is the method are you using to do the folder sync?

In the end, because of my own screw up, I had to nuke the remote vault, and repopulate it (via folder sync) after syncing only the correct folder. It seems once the vault gets into a bad state, it has to be deleted on the remote end to move forward.

    Hi @loft,

Sorry for not replying to you here sooner. After looking into this problem (thanks for all the details!) here's what I think will fix it:

    • Open 1Password, then press Control-Command-Q to quit 1Password and 1Password mini.
    • Open Terminal.app (from the /Applications/Utilities folder).
    • Copy this one-line text command, paste it into the Terminal window, and press Return (or Enter):

      defaults delete 2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper NSNavLastRootDirectory

(Note: this will not touch any of your 1Password data)

    • Close the Terminal window.

    • Open 1Password again and see if you can successfully reconfigure syncing. Just a reminder of what @Stephen_C mentioned earlier:

It's not recommended to sync with a network volume but only with a folder on a local or removable drive.

I'd also like to suggest updating to 1Password 5.3… unless, of course, you've already done that. :)

I hope this helps; please let us know how it goes!

    Hi @sjk,

thanks for your reply :) and sorry for my late reply ...

I've updated to 5.3 and executed the terminal command.
Unfortunately I'm still not able to select a new syncing folder. :(
The repeating error message (as mentioned above) still occurs.

As soon as I exit 1Password the error no longer appears.

    What else can I do?

    Thanks,
    Micha

    Welcome back, @loft. :)

Sorry you couldn't get that to work. Did you quit 1Password and 1Password mini before running the Terminal command?

I've got another idea and would first like you to sent a Diagnostics Report from your Mac for me to check before sending you specific instructions. Please include a link to this discussion and your forum username in the email, preferably sent to support+forum@agilebits.com. A follow-up comment here mentioning that you've sent the report will help to find it and get back with you again quicker. Thanks!

    Hi @sjk,

I've just sent the email with the diagnostics report...

    Thanks,
    Micha :)

Got it, @loft – thanks for sending that in!

I'll email you more details to fix this problem after analyzing the report.

    Hello @sjk,

    thanks for your email.
That solution with restore my backup and restart 1P worked for me.
    Thanks a lot! :)

    You're most welcome, Micha!

Thanks for letting us know you've successfully reset the sync state of your 1Password database by doing a backup/restore. If there's anything more we can help you with please don't hesitate to ask. :)
