Will I lose my custom-colored menubar icon if I upgrade to 5.3?

I am reluctant to upgrade, despite the many tempting features, because I had to custom-color my 1Password icon in the Apple menubar, in order to pick it out quickly, without having to repeatedly study all my icons each and every time I need to use 1Password, which was getting to be very aggravating. After all that icon is the starting point for entering each password-protected website, repeatedly all day long.
If I have to lose it, I will just stop upgrading, albeit with regret.

Or have you finally included an option to allow those of us who need to, to select a color icon of our choice, that instantly connects with our brains that - "Yes, this is the 1Password button!"

I really don't buy the argument that the icon has to conform to "what Apple wants" because Apple doesn't have to use my Mac - I do. And because of its function, the 1Password icon is accessed many, many more times per day than any other menubar icon.

PS - It was simple to do - just filling in the white space with yellow and now it looks like a golden keyslot, but I really shouldn't have to do this over and over everytime there is a 1P upgrade, should I?

    Hi Nate ( @NateS ),

Yes indeed, upgrading will replace the customized icon with the 1Password icon. You could simply back up your customized version and replace it after updating. :)

That said, you may find the keyboard shortcut ( Cmd+\ ) easier to use than trying to find the menubar icon all the time.

    Thanks!

Thanks for your reply, Ben but that is disappointing news. When one passes a certain age milestone, icons take on increasing importance. I was content to rely on keyboard commands when I was young and using MS-DOS, but those days are behind me.
    Respectfully,
    Nate

Bartender (which moves chosen menubar items into a separate clickable bar) might help you. I am myself fairly elderly, and don't have any trouble finding the 1PW icon now I have Bartender.

Thanks for the suggestion danco, but I already use Bartender which was advertised as a place to keep infrequently used menubar icons, and it works quite well for keeping those out of sight and avoiding having so many icons in the menubar that they start disappearing on the left.
But for something I use as often daily as 1Password, I wouldn't care for stowing it there.
Maybe I'll see if I can create an Automator script for restoring my color icon after each update.
I'll have to think about that.

Yes, of course. What I meant was that for me using Bartender means that my main menu bar is uncluttered and I don't have difficulty picking out the 1PW icon.

  • Thanks for the feedback here, NateS, and for the assistance danco!

Thank you. It turned out to be easier than I expected, once I thought about it and decided an Automator script would be overkill. I simply created a "Fix 1PW Icon" folder on my desktop, and put 1) a copy of my colored icon in it together with 2) an alias to the Resources folder within which the icon resides at Applications ▸ 1Password 5 ▸ Contents ▸ Library ▸ LoginItems ▸ 1Password mini ▸ Contents ▸ Resources.

(With thanks to jb510's Jan 9th post for the precise location of "menu-bar-icon": in his comment at:
    https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/comment/172632#Comment_172632)

Then I upgraded to 1Password 5.3, restarted in Safe Boot, copy/dragged (1) into (2), did a normal restart and voila! - I've got my golden lock icon residing in my menubar with 1Password 5.3.

From here on out, unless you move the icon (please don't do that!), I am ready for all upgrades to 1Password as they come out! And 5.3 is great! Thank you!

    Regards, Nate :D

Incidentally, if agilebits ever decides to reconsider their position on this, you won't be alone. I have discovered that several or more third party application developers, who dutifully switched to Apple's black, rather nondescript Yosemite-style menubar icons, are now including an option buried in their Preferences, to allow the user to switch to a colored icon of the user's choice, e.g. CrashPlan, ClipMenu and somewhat ironically even Bartender, which started out with a black icon. And that's with no digging into the application's Package Contents!

I'm glad you managed to find a solution that works for you @NateS.

As for file locations inside the application bundle. I would assume we're again following Apple's guidelines there so I don't imagine they'll change unless Apple shake things up. I would suspect you are safe for the medium term.

I'm happy to hear you're liking 5.3
