Running 1Password.app from DropBox 3.4.4
- I’m using 1Password version #: 5.3
- On a (Mac/PC/iOS/Android): Mac OS X 10.10.3
- DropBox v 3,4.4
I want to keep 1Password.app ON DropBox (not just the data file) and run it from 3 different Macs. One at a time not together. This way I have only 1 copy of 1P to update when needed. I believe this is called a cloud friendly application.
For months I had it working but I believe with your recent update to 5.3 this broke. I now get the error "1Pasword 5 cannot be opened because of a problem" "Check with the developer..." Below is the "Report"
When I get this error I tried moving 1Password.app to my Applications folder but it still gives the error. I have to download a fresh copy of 1P to get it working.
thank you
Bill

Hi @quattlebaum,
I'm sorry you're having trouble with 1Password! I wanted to mention that in general, keeping apps in your Dropbox folder is probably not an ideal setup. In theory, Mac apps should work correctly from pretty much anywhere, but there are some issues that can potentially happen under certain circumstances.
To be clear, I don't think running 1Password from the Dropbox folder caused this particular problem. However, if an app in your Dropbox folder becomes damaged, that same damaged app will be copied to your other Macs as well. Fortunately this issue shouldn't harm your 1Password data, but it's possible a similar situation with another app might have more severe consequences.
Now, to get back to the specific issue you ran into - it sounds like you were able to get it working again by downloading a new copy of the 1Password app, which is what I would have suggested. Just in case someone else with this problem is looking for a solution, here are the steps that should help:
- Move 1Password 5.app from your Applications folder to your Trash.
- Do not allow any app cleaning tools to clean up after 1Password. Only the .app file should be in the Trash. Now, empty the Trash.
- Reboot your Mac.
- After it restarts, download a new copy of 1Password from our download site.
- Extract the downloaded file (if necessary) and move the new 1Password 5.app file to your Applications folder (it should now work properly).
I hope this helps, but please let us know if you have more questions about that. Thanks!
