  • I’m using 1Password version #:5.3
  • On a (Mac/PC/iOS/Android):Mac
  • Syncing with other devices (list them):iPhone 6

I purchased 1Password 3 years ago and have updated ever since. Now I'm getting a notice that my "trial version" has expired but I can't find a way to add my license.

Oh. I guess I have to pay for the latest upgrade. I haven't paid for any previous one so I got spoiled. Sigh.

Yes, the upgrade from 3 to 4 was not free, but a bug meant that some people found it possible to keep using 4 without paying.

    Hi @Ottarsdottir,

Sorry about that. It sounds like you've discovered the answer and as danco has said, 1Password 4 was pretty quiet about indicating that the trial had ended.

Our actual policy, as per our AgileBits Software Licenses page is

Your purchase entitles you to free updates until the next major version upgrade. That means if you buy a license for version 2 of a product, you will get all 2.x releases for free, but upgrading to version 3 might require another purchase.

The bold emphasis was me. All 1Password 4 users are eligible to update to 1Password 5 for free, the only requirement being that they're running Yosemite. Whenever 1Password 6 ever arrives (I don't know anything, I'm just assuming we're not skipping a number) it may be a paid upgrade - I can't say.

Another extract from that same page though.

When you purchase AgileBits software your license will never expire and you can use it on the current version of the licensed application indefinitely. While the license itself will never expire, system updates from Apple could cause certain aspects of some software to stop working.

On this occasion, the bold emphasis was already present.

I hope that helps clarify our licensing but if you have follow up questions do please ask.

I get it. Thank you for this explanation. Like many people, I fear, I rarely fully read all those pesky "terms and conditions," with the predictable result that I never know what's going on. This is usually ok but sometimes I have to ask questions to which people who have read the terms are the only ones who know the answers. Thanks again for the enlightenment.

How many pages is your typical terms and conditions? you're definitely not alone  If you're a South Park fan at all then you'll probably appreciate the HUMANCENTiPAD episode (this link is for US people only it seems) and also, that's why we're here, to help answer any questions you have
