Change the category of an entry

Hi,

It's possible to change the category of an entry in 1password? I have imported about 700 entries from KeePassX with MrC's tool and all entries were imported by 1password as "Login", notwithstanding the fact that there were numerous entries from KeePassX which aren't a "Login"-entry.

It would be a little bit annoying to create new entries with the correspondent categories and copy all the "Non-Login", imported entries by hand in this new entries/categories.

Because different categories have different default fields I'm afraid you can't currently easily change the category of an item. You may find it helps, though, to use 1P mini to find an item the category of which you need to change, display the item details (hover over the item with your mouse or navigate to it with the keyboard) then click on the anchor symbol in the bottom left. That will anchor the item details on your screen which will facilitate the copying and pasting while you re-create it in the new category.

I know it's not what you requested so please don't shoot the messenger! It's just an idea that may help you a little. :)

    Hi @nicono,

Stephen's answer is spot-on - it's not possible to move an item from one category to another since the fields are different in each category. We're looking at this for the future, though, and may have some better solutions eventually. For now, I'm afraid you would need to copy and paste the data into a new item in the new category.

I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you about that! Please let us know if you have more questions - we're here for you! :)

    Hi @nicono,

Perhaps a customized version of the KeepassX converter module can be created for you to do what you like. KeepassX really only supports Logins, so the converter generally places all entries into Logins.

Can you describe what you need, and what fields can be used to indicate how items should be categorized?

    Hello everybody,

Sorry for the late response, but we communicate through a time difference.

And thank you for your responses!

I think that I have to do it manually, either with the method suggested from Stephen_C or with the database opened with KeepassX and 1Password (copy and paste from KeepassX to 1Password). Another, software-based solution for the future would be very helpful. It would be very useful if alone the username, the password and the url could transferred from specific categories in other specific categories (Login, Server, E-Mail, Membership, bank account and other have all fields like password, username and url).

MrC: Actually, I won't bother you with my problems and steal your time. But anyway: I have a lot of E-Mail-Accounts, Severs(-Accounts), WLAN-Routers, Social Security Numbers, databases and memberships. Perhaps I'am faster with the copy-and-past-method instead of think about field-type and eventually correct the imported items once again...?

P.S. How can I made these @username-links in this forum (like @nicono, or @Stepehn_C)?

@nicono you just did it! Just add @ at the start of the username. If the relevant people have enabled the relevant notification setting in their profile they will be notified when their name is mentioned.

    Hi @nicono,

Don't worry - it took me ages to get used to the formatting here. :)

Thanks so much for your feedback with respect to Categories - we're always looking to improve 1Password and make it more convenient for users, we'll definitely consider your thoughts when re-designing Categories.

I hope that 1Password works perfectly for you from now on, but if you have any questions or concerns, we're here to help.

A user of Keepass2 and I recently discussed how to customize the converter to create additional categories on conversion / import. This might be worth a look for you, in case you are interested:

As you can see, after reviewing the longish explanation, the resulting additions to the converter are pretty straightforward. So if you have many entries that you need to manually copy/paste, it might be worth teaching the converter about your custom fields, and allow the converter to do the work for you. Its really a matter that depends entirely on how many records you have that need to be manually copied. If you want help, send me an email so we can take this discussion offline (my email is at the top of the converter scripts).
