Questions about auto-lock

In Preferences under Auto-Lock there are two options: Lock on sleep and Lock when screensaver is activated.

I have some questions based on what is checked/unchecked. All combos below have 1Password unlocked initially:

#1
Lock on sleep - Checked
Lock when screensaver is activated - Checked

This locks 1Password when the computer is put in sleep mode then woken up.
This locks 1Password when the display is put in sleep mode then woken up.

This makes sense.

#2
Lock on sleep - Unchecked
Lock when screensaver is activated - Checked

This locks 1Password when the computer is put in sleep mode then woken up.
This locks 1Password when the display is put in sleep mode then woken up.

I would think that with this combo, 1Password would remain unlocked when the computer goes to sleep. But it locks instead. Is it because the screen also goes into sleep mode when the computer does?

#3
Lock on sleep - Checked
Lock when screensaver is activated - Unchecked

This locks 1Password when the computer is put in sleep mode then woken up.
This keeps 1Password unlocked when the display is put in sleep mode then woken up.

This makes sense.

#4
Lock on sleep - Unchecked
Lock when screensaver is activated - Unchecked

This keeps 1Password unlocked when the computer is put in sleep mode then woken up.
This keeps 1Password unlocked when the display is put in sleep mode then woken up.

This makes sense.

So I guess after listing these, my only confusion is with option #2. :) Thanks for any clarification!

    Hi @ScarySulley,

Well I've done some investigating, conferred with the developers and after even some experimentation it would seem to be that we're reacting to a very particular event. It is only fired if you have the Require password X minutes after sleep or screen saver begins setting enabled in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General tab which it is by default. If this setting is disabled, which I personally wouldn't recommend, then the settings behave as normal.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Between your observations and watching the event notifications being fired I think this should be a reasonably easy bug to fix. Thankfully the symptoms of this particular bug are the vault locking when it shouldn't. Possibly annoying but I'd rather have it lock unnecessarily than not locking when it should. Obviously it still needs fixed

    Hi @littlebobbytables,

Interesting regarding the additional System Preferences setting. The 1Password setting for #2 does indeed work as expected if I turn off the Required password after X minutes...Didn't realize this was a bug. As you said, at least the bug locks the vault as opposed to leaving it unlocked when it's supposed to be locked.

    Thanks!

    Hey @ScarySulley,

On behalf of @littlebobbytables and the developers, you're very welcome! It is indeed funny to find that we're accidentally more secure than intended. Best kind of bug, I suppose, but we don't want to be annoying our users either.

Thanks again from all of us here for your observation and thoughtful question! It's engaged users like you that help us constantly improve 1Password. Cheers! :)
