Out of country problem

Hello all. I live in the US, and use 1Password, syncing with Dropbox. Last year, while traveling in Bali, I could not use 1P with Dropbox until I responded to Dropbox to a text message, asking for verification of my identity. This seems reasonable, but since I could not receive text messages while there, I was out of luck. Dropbox apparently does not allow verification by email, only text. Wondering if anyone else has this or a similar situation? For example, is this a problem abroad if using iCloud to sync instead of Dropbox? I hope this is not written too confusingly. Thanks.

  • Hi @1Pfanatic,

Do you have two step authentication turned on for Dropbox? If so that may have been what you ran into. Did you already have Dropbox syncing set up in 1Password prior to being asked to verify? I'm a little confused as to how the sync with 1Password could have been interrupted.

    Please let us know!

Thanks for the reply. bwoodruff. Actually, although a 1Password user myself, I asked the question for a fellow I recently converted to 1P, but who is, lets's say technically challenged. I'll query him about it further. But apparently, this problem of not being able to log into Dropbox while in Bali pre-dated using 1Password. He simply tried to access DB on his last trip, but was informed he they needed to verify his identity. Perhaps it was a firewall or ISP issue in that country or region, or as you say, two-step verification might have been turned on, though I doubt it. In any case, DB wanted to send him a text to respond to, but he could not get texts. My understanding is that while some companies (Apple, etc.) allow you to choose the method of receipt, Dropbox only sends texts. Bottom line, we're trying to make sure when he goes back to Bali soon that he can access his 1Password info synched to Dropbox. I've suggested he might sync with iCloud instead of Dropbox, as it may have better overseas usability. I'll get back to you with whether he has two-step verification.

A question from me, please. I hadn't tried to use 1Password Anywhere for a long time. Today, I tried to open the Agllebits keychain (in Dropbox) on both my iPad Mini (6.1.2) and my iPad Air 2 (8.1.2), and in each case I got the message about needing a key file. I looked at the file located at MyComputer/Dropbox/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain, and noticed that it has a creation date of March 2014 and modification date of Oct 2014. It's the only 1Password.agilekeychain I can find in my Dropbox, and all my devices (iPads, iPhone and Mac) seem to be syncing fine. Can you advise why the file seems to be out of date, and how to use 1Password Anywhere? Thanks.

  • Once Dropbox syncing is setup within 1Password, I've never seen it stop due to the Dropbox account needing any sort of verification or authentication. That isn't to say that it couldn't happen, but I don't know that iCloud would be any different in that case.

The creation/modification date on the 1Password.agilekeychain container is not an accurate way to judge if 1Password is updating properly. Most modern web browsers prevent "local file access" (i.e. web pages are not allowed to access files on your computer). This is a good thing. But it does in most cases prevent 1PasswordAnywhere from working from your local file system. You can access it from the Dropbox website though:

    Thanks!

Thanks Ben. I have since learned that my fiend's problem was not exactly what I reported. He was unable to connect to Dropbox (and a few other sites) from his Macbook while connected to a WiFi network in Bali. It was the only network he had access to, and we're now guessing that particular network or router was set to block some connections.

As to my question, thanks for the info. I am able to access my read-only agilebits keychain from Dropbox on my Macbook. I assumed this would be possible on an iPad or iPhone as well. However, when tapping the abilebits keychain from Dropbox on the iDevices, I get the message below. Naturally, I'll follow the instructions suggested in the link if you think that's the solution. And I do have 1Password on all my iDevices, but I was trying out "Anywhere" in case my device was stolen, and I had to use someone else's.

@1Pfanatic You can access 1Password Anywhere on iPad by logging into your Dropbox account in Safari or another browser rather than through the Dropbox App.

  • @tonydow is correct, 1PasswordAnywhere does normally work in Safari on Dropbox's website (though not designed for mobile browsers), but does not work from within the Dropbox app. Hope that helps, @1Pfanatic. Thanks for the assist, Tony!
