How to avoid having to unlock 1password for each new tab on Safari?

Sorry to be dense, but I am unable to find the Extensions in the Safari browser on my IPad but the other information below is correct. I am trying to learn how to make 1Password on my IPad behave like it does on my Win8 machine; i.e. stay open for a specified time after being opened either in the browser or as a stand alone program on the IPad. Every time I leave 1Password to paste information into another application (eg. credit card information), I have to reopen 1Password when I come right back to it. The airdrop shortcut to 1Password operates the same way - after a one time password fill or other use, I have to re-enter my 1Password to select something else, another website, or whatever.

My 1Password master password is by design, lengthy and complicated. It is a real pain to have to enter all of this to get to the info stored in my secure vault when I have just a few seconds ago gone through the same exercise. I like the implementation in my Chrome browser on my Windows machine much better and wonder if there is some configuration setting on the IPad that I've missed. If not, what has kept this obviously more useful characteristic from being implemented for iOS?

    Hi @Zoombag,

You're not being dense at all, on iOS the extension is tied directly to the version of 1Password, it's just on the desktops (Windows and Mac) where the extension is downloaded separately and tends to differ

So to your query. There are a couple of options, all of which can be found in the Security tab of 1Password's Settings (on the iPad the cog icon in the bottom left hand corner).

    • If you have Lock on Exit enabled 1Password is locked straight away. This means your Master Password is required each time.
    • If you have it disabled you instead rely on the Auto-Lock. 1Password will remain unlocked for this length of time. If you access 1Password again it resets the timer. Now currently, using the extension doesn't reset the timer but I believe we may be altering that to bring it more inline with how it works on OS X.
    • If you have a Passcode or TouchID enabled on your iPad then you should also have the option to set a PIN or enable TouchID in 1Password for iOS. Take the example of the PIN. It's a four digit PIN but if you fail just once you're forced to enter your Master Password. This helps limits the risk.

So at the moment, if you set the Auto-Lock with a long enough delay and make sure to unlock your vault from the main app, you should find the extension remains unlocked for this period of time. If your vault is locked and you unlock it from the extension it will revert to being locked. As I mentioned earlier, I think this may change at some point in the future as there's the argument that unlocked should be unlocked and that we don't differentiate between the extension and the main iOS app.

    Does that help at all?

Thanks so much. I had been to the security tab before but failed to understand the implications. Have also now set the pin as you suggested. Along with the new extension in Safari, I will have a much more user friendly ability to use 1Password in the manner I have come to rely upon with my Windows machine! Thanks for upping my security level :)
