Need Stand Alone Password Generator

Since the iOS app doesn't have a "1Password Helper", your only option to generate passwords is within the logins themselves, which is akin to doing it within the app on mac/windows and not via the mini/extension. When using the iOS versions browser, you sort of get a hybrid in that when you click "create new login" it at least pulls in the current sites web address.

For creating a new login or maybe adding security questions you then can create the login and generate a password, save it go back and paste it. Then when you have to enter security questions repeat the process by clicking the key and "i" icon, click edit and create the fields, type as password and generate a password, etc.

But, what if you now log into a site and you are requested to change your password? Or change/update your security questions? If you go into the login and edit, you can change your password or security question answers (password field). But that physically overwrites it and then copies that to the clipboard. If you mess up you have now overwritten your original answers and no way to get them back and can easily get locked out. Yes, you do have access to the site's previously used password, which is saved in the "previously Used Password" option. But, security question responses (field of password) are not saved in any list when changed (as far as I can see). On a mac or win you can use the mini/extension's generator to create a new password/answer. This allows you to then change the answer on the site 1st and then you can edit the login and paste when you know the change was done. The answer is always avail in the "generated password" lists on those platforms. or even in the "generated passwords/History for...." list on the mac or the "Last Generated Password" option in the mini/extension on windows (Which is another missing option on the mac, which is much quicker to access that info).

Having a stand alone generator option, would then be beneficial. Accessible when you are using the 1password browser and click the key or Safari (assuming you added the ability to use the 1password extension) would come in handy. Then you can generate passwords, which would be auto saved in the "generated passwords list" based on the currently viewed site in the browser. Also, there should probably be a "Last Generated Password" option that appears here as well.

This next part should probably be posted in the Windows and Mac forums as well, since I believe they are run by different teams. Or maybe this should be a different topic.

-The password generator options need consistency across the platforms. I can only speak for iOS, Windows & Mac, since those are the platforms I use. The Windows version has "Generate Diceware Passwords", the others do not. The Mac, has "Pronounceable Passwords", which are not on iOS or Windows. All three should have the Diceware and Pronounceable options and the settings should be the same for all.

  • For Diceware, you should have an option under advanced to restrict use of numbers. I use the diceware or pronounceable option for the security questions. Many times there are limitations on what can be used in these fields.

  • For Diceware, you should have the option to limit by length, since I have had many security questions limited to specific field length. As of now you can just limit based on number of words. This is where sometimes the pronounceable option would be better choice, since that is done by total length.

-For Diceware, you currently need to have a separator. There should be an option "No separator" option. Or maybe also add an option for alternating case, where there is no spaces but every other word is a different case (appleORANGEpear) so its at least pronouncable/legible. Again, some sites have rules for what is acceptable in the security questions answer field and are looking for a 1 word response.

  • For Pronounceable, like the Diceware option above, there should be an alternating case option. There is a mixed case option but that just does mixed case throughout the password.

  • For Pronounceable, there should be a "Space" separator as well. Which come in handy for those sites that may allow spaces (multiple words) but not special characters or numbers.

  • Hi @imt,

There are some great thoughts here. Thank you for taking the time to detail them out. One of our big goals moving forward is to bring as much consistency is reasonable to 1Password across platforms, without removing the unique look & feel each platform provides. Not an easy or quick task, but something we're working towards as we progress.

Diceware in the password generator is one of our more common feature requests. I don't have any sort of a timeline to share, but that is definitely under consideration by our developers for all platforms.

This next part should probably be posted in the Windows and Mac forums as well, since I believe they are run by different teams. Or maybe this should be a different topic.

Yes, different folks handle different platforms (to some extent) but we're pretty good about communicating internally. :) They're already aware of the desire.

    Thanks!

    Ben
