Hello, I had iOS 7.1.2 with old version 1password installed (I don't remember what version), and I choose iCloud to store my vault. Now I have iOS 8 and new version 1password but when I tried to sync I got that error message. I read some article that 1Password 5 cannot detect iCloud vaults created on older versions of iOS. For your existing iCloud data to become available to your new device, you will first need to upgrade at least one of the devices which you already use with 1Password.

But the problem is I don't have another device which already use with old 1password :-(( I also don't have Mac or PC. This device is the only one I have. I'm not a advanced user so Please give me easy steps how to recover it, or If any Agilebits staff willing to help with my problem I would really grateful, I will give my iCloud username and password. I'm sorry for my bad English. Thanks

1Password Version: 5.4.3

    Hi @aerifal,

I apologise that we haven't responded to you until now.

Unfortunately the only way forward will require access to a Mac given you don't have an iOS device that still has access to your vault. You wouldn't need permanent access, if you have a friend with a Mac who doesn't mind creating a temporary OS X user account for you that would be sufficient. After you're finished the account can be deleted, returning their Mac to the initial state it was in. The steps will require 1Password for Mac as well but the trial mode in our AgileBits Store version is sufficient for the task so there is no unnecessary expenditure required. For all of this to work though your vault must be unlocked so it can only be performed by you.

Do you have such a friend that could assist?

Could this be done at an Apple store? Are they generally willing to help in these situations?

@aerifal without trying to speak for the Agilebits guys but I doubt they'll want to responsibility of having your icloud login.

Why not go down to the Apple store and see if they'll let you use one of their systems.

I will give my iCloud ID and password to agilebits team to recover it. to whom should I give my data?

@aerifal: Sorry for the confusion! To be clear, you should not give anyone your iCloud credentials. Ever.

AgileBits will not access your accounts for you, as this would be incredibly inappropriate and would compromise your security. No one should have access to your accounts or sensitive information but you. After all, that's the whole point of 1Password.

Now, lil bobby suggested that you use a friend's Mac to try to retrieve your data from your iCloud account, as this wouldn't require that you hand over your account credentials to them. You could simply access it from their computer and log back out of the account once you have what you need. It's just a temporary means of access.

So with that in mind, it may be that this is something that an Apple Store could help with, but I wouldn't presume to speak on Apple's behalf. That's definitely your next best option if there isn't a friend who can help you. And just so there's no misunderstanding, we at AgileBits will do anything that we can to help you get your data back into 1Password for iOS (version 5), but you would need to have that data first, by recovering it from your iCloud account.

So, I wanted to also provide some insight into why you're having this problem in the first place. When Apple introduced iCloud, it used an API referred to as "Documents & Data" to store and sync data. So this is what older versions of 1Password (and other apps) used in Mavericks/iOS 7 and earlier, because that's what Apple offered. With Yosemite/iOS 8, Apple introduced CloudKit/iCloud Drive, so this is what 1Password 5 uses on Yosemite/iOS 8. Documents & Data cannot be read/written by CloudKit/iCloud Drive, and vice versa. If this sounds complicated and confusing, that's because it is; unfortunately, while the "new" iCloud is a big improvement, it meant breaking compatibility with the "old" iCloud — which is where your 1Password data seems to be stored. If you had 1Password 4 with your data in it, 1Password 5 could simply import it, to avoid the iCloud compatibility issues altogether. But 1Password 5 is an iOS 8 app, and therefore can only access CloudKit data.

To reiterate, AgileBits will not access your accounts for you, but once you have your data we will be happy to help you get it into 1Password. But first it must be recovered from Documents & Data in your (pre-CloudKit/iCloud Drive) iCloud account. If you are able to gain access to a Mac to recover your data from iCloud, here are the instructions you'll need:

Manually migrate old iCloud to new CloudKit

But if you cannot recover your data from iCloud — either with the help of a friend or Apple — I'm afraid you will need to start over with a new vault. I'm sorry I don't have better news for you, but I do hope that one of these options will work for you. Please let us know how it turns out.

So which one is better? create a new vault and lost all my password or one of Agilebits team trying to recover it for me? Besides, I still have my Master Password.

Don't worry I don't have sensitive information such Bank account or credit card information, etc. that's why I don't feel worried if Agilebits recover it. It's only social networking info, Skype and some notes and phone number. But if Agilebits still refuse to help it's okay and the case is closed now. Because I wouldn't struggling asking help here if I have a friend with OS X.

@brenty given that's the old icloud drive, would the windows client be able to access the dats?

@RichardPayne: It's a good idea, but it won't work. It's super confusing, but iCloudDrive is the new one. Previously, iCloud wasn't exposing a filesystem the way it does now, so even with the old Windows iCloud client you wouldn't be able to access "Documents & Data" data from iOS or OS X, unfortunately. And Windows simply never had access to those APIs. :(

@aerifal: AgileBits is not going to access your iCloud account, as no company (with the possible exception of Apple) should. Your 1Password data is encrypted, so that's not a concern. But your accounts — iCloud or otherwise — are none of our business. I do still believe that it's at least worth a try with Apple, since iCloud is their service after all, but failing that it sounds like the best option would be to start with a new vault. And if you did not have a great deal of important data in the old vault, it may not be too much of a hardship after all.
