I want to be able to set the default vault to open on iOS
It is my preference to be able to name the vault I want to use by default on my iOS device. This is a vault that is on Dropbox.
Currently I am very frustrated because the Primary Vault opens by default when 1Password is launched.
This means "almost" every time I use 1Password it is required to go to the Settings and select the vault that stores my passwords.
Why isn't there a option to set for the default vault to open? Is it a problem to implement?
I can see that this issue has been raised before. There does not seem to be a resolution.
What steps would be required to replace the contents currently empty Primary Vault with the passwords from my self named vault?
Can the primary vault be synced via Dropbox?

The RC for the next version (iOS) will undoubtably make your life a little easier. Its not exactly what you are asking for, but I think it will pleasantly surprise you. * Sorry, I have no details on how long or when it will make it through the review process but soon hopefully! I just checked, and its not arrived yet. :(
I dont want to give specific details, as one it may spoil the release. Two Apples review process can take some time, and I don't know when or if it was submitted already. I saw indications it was but no final confirmation.
As to your specific questions.
- Sounds like you may be using a primary vault via iCloud.
- All vaults can be synced via Dropbox.
I'll let the staff answer your questions on that as I am not familiar with all the intricacies of iCloud. Some things you may wish to reply with are if you are also using Mac version of 1Password. (or any others at work etc.)
That will give the staff a better chance to see the entire picture of your syncing setup.

Hi @DonV,
Thightower is right, we're working on simplifying the vault-switching process in 1Password for iOS, and I hope it makes your life simpler.
I'd be happy to share your thoughts with the team with respect to unlocking to a particular vault. You're right, we have heard this request before, and I'll add your feedback to the issue in our internal tracker. (When the next update is released, I'd love to hear your thoughts on our improved vault-switching work flow!)

Thank you for the responses. I look forward to seeing the update.
I would say the requested behavior of a user selected default vault is reasonable. To not have this feature is odd.0 -
Hi @DonV,
Thanks for your patience!
I'll just give you a bit of background as to why the iOS app is designed the way that it is. When we designed multiple vaults for 1Password, not all vaults were created equal. The primary vault (or the first vault created by the user when opening 1Password for the first time) was given certain special powers. One of these powers is that the encryption keys of all secondary vaults are stored inside the primary vault. This ensures that users only ever have to remember one password, because unlocking the primary vault will unlock all secondary vaults.
This feature was first introduced in 1Password for Mac. When we brought the feature to iOS, it was managed in much the same way: users would set up 1Password for iOS with their primary vault. Unlocking the primary vault on iOS will also give the user access to their secondary vaults, without having to enter the password for each vault.
On reading your original post though, it sounds like you have one completely empty vault and all your data in a secondary vault. Could you tell me a bit more detail about your setup? Are you making use of the multiple vaults feature on your Mac? I guess I don't understand quite why you're using an empty vault on your iOS device. We can probably make this less complicated for you, but I'll need to know more first. ;)

My primary iOS vault is empty. All my passwords are in a vault I have created and named. (Not the Primary Vault)
I am not using multiple vaults at this time.
My desktop is a PC running windows 7.
I am using Dropbox to manage a single common vault. I open the single vault stored on Dropbox from all my devices including the PC.I'm open to suggestions and will work with you.
I appreciate that you gave an explanation for the way it is now. Still it should be possible to have a primary vault with a name of my choosing ;-)
The named vault came about through the process of importing passwords from another password manager, PasswordDepot. It took an number of iterations to get the correct results so there were multiple vaults created during this process.
FYI the iOS user interface for 1Password is far superior to PasswordDepot. This is why I changed PW managers.

Hi @DonV,
The easiest way to move forward then would be to:
Backup your data:
https://support.1password.com/ios-itunes-backups/Uninstall & reinstall the iOS app
On first launch select that you are an existing 1Password user, sync with Dropbox, and choose your desired vault to sync with.
We do appreciate your suggestion regarding changing which vault is primary, and that is something our developers have filed as an improvement request.
Thanks!
Ben

What does the name of the vault on Dropbox need to be in order to share a common vault on all my devices? Passwords need to be able to be added on any device to the common vault.

Don,
The file name is irrelevant (as long as you haven't changed the file extension from .agilekeychain).
Thanks.

Hello,
I will add my request to set the default vault on open in iOS and on my OS X version. I have bought your product for my wife and family. And share various vaults. However, this does not work so well (though sync is fine). In that one has no easy way to have a default vault open when one logs into 1Password.
So please allow support for a default vault on open ... it is critical for those of us who wish to share vaults.
Thanks,

Hi @esmith888,
Thanks for taking the time to let us know! I can't make any promises of course, but I'll be happy to add your feedback to our internal tracker to let our developers know you'd like to be able to do that. I can definitely see how that would be a useful option!
If you need anything else, please let us know. We're always glad to help! :)

Hi,
I found this thread while searching for a solution that would allow me to open a secondary vault by default on my iOS device. I like to add another use case for the AgileBits team to consider. I use multiple vaults on my Mac and iOS devices for additional security and peace of mind. My primary vault is used for highly sensitive items such as credit cards, and social security numbers. Two secondary vaults are created for work and personal items. My rationale is that vaults can remain unlocked for long periods while browsing. In the event an attacker is ever able to access the unlocked vault they will not get access to my highly sensitive items stored in the primary vault.
Looking for to being able to open a secondary vault on iOS by default. Thanks, John

@john_bako: 1Password for iOS does not have a separate lock setting for each vault, but it sounds like that might be what you actually want. Is that correct? It's something we can consider for a future version, but ideally we'd like to keep the app both secure and simple. And simply using the existing lock features can ensure that your vault is secure even if you hand over your device to someone. Please let me know what you think! :)

I would really like to have this too. my workflow on my laptop and desktop machine is similar to this.
I can use this to make sure I always have my work credentials with me, but I don't ever unlock them unless I am actually using them, which is rare for my personal device. I like that a lot.
I'd love to do this on my iphone too. Might I suggest that the lock screen could keep the same clean appearance and function, but reveal a selector when you swipe. This could only appear if the user has multiple vaults available.
Another way would be to allow me to decline to save the credentials of certain other vaults in my main vault. I understand from some blog posts I've read on the subject that agile has philosophical problems with this workflow, since forgetting credentials is a real threat to your users. I get it. It's the name of your product. But I still want this.

Thanks for letting us know this would be helpful to you, Ben. :)

I have a better use case that you may find more compelling.
I've set my kids up with their own 1password accounts. I have 1password set up on the family ipad, and it has their password vaults attached. Right now, I have to help them sign in to things, or give them the master password which would give them access to all of my personal, business, and financial accounts, as well as all of each others' accounts.
I trust my kids, but I still don't want them in my email or billpay stuff. And the temptation to snoop on each other would be huge.
If they could do something to select their own vault without unlocking the master first, they could use 1password on the shared device the same way they are used to on their own devices.

Ben,
That actually sounds like a different request entirely (but also one we've heard before). It sounds like you'd like to be able to unlock a secondary vault without unlocking the primary vault. I'll add your vote for that request as well. :)
