Recovering From a Separate iCloud Backup??

Situation: iPhone gets a virus which is tied to an iCloud backup. Only option according to the geniuses is to wipe and restore everything manually.

Result: 1Password doesn't restore anything from iCloud since it looks like the backup is tied to individual iCloud backups and not to the iCloud account.

Is this correct? If so this is a horrible backup option and users should be warned. Apple's iCloud backups are becoming less and less stable to viruses while they just result to the simple resolution of "wipe and start over" more often.

@MAMiller44: Sorry for the confusion! Indeed, iCloud accounts cannot share data between them. This is by Apple's design and, frankly, it's a good secure one. This is the same as email: one account won't have access to messages stored only in another. There just isn't any way around that. You can, however, backup your 1Password vault and restore from that backup:

Creating and restoring 1Password backups in iTunes (iOS)

Now, I'm not aware of any iOS viruses. Since sandboxing will not allow one app to interact with another, there's simply no way for them to do anything even remotely 'useful' on your device. And iCloud backups are just user data — there's no executable code there, not even apps, only their settings and such. I'm rather curious what has you convinced of this, since it isn't technically feasible at this time.

At any rate, issues with iCloud would need to be directed to Apple, since they own and operate the service. Especially if there is something wrong with your iCloud backup (virus or not), they'd be the only ones who can help with (or access) that. Cheers! :)

Hi Brenty, thanks for the response but there's a little disconnect here. I'm not trying to pull 1password backup from one iCloud account to another iCloud account. I'm trying to pull 1password backup off a corrupt iCloud backup, while still being logged into the same account that hosts that specific backup.

  • Hi @MAMiller44

Unfortunate I'm not super familiar with how iCloud's backup system works (as Brenty mentioned you may get better answers regarding iCloud from Apple). Because of some of the complications and unreliability re: 1Password data we've experienced in the past we now include a backup and restore feature directly within 1Password, and that is how we recommend folks backup their 1Password data:

I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you.

@MAMiller44: Thanks for clarifying. That makes it easy for me to do the same: apps (1Password or otherwise) cannot access your iCloud backups; they can only access their own individual iCloud storage sandboxes to read and write to. So, definitely best to contact Apple, since you're talking about dealing with an iCloud backup directly. We just can't touch those.

    Hi @MAMiller44,

Would it be possible to restore the infected backup, just briefly, so that you can extract your vault before then wiping once again? I have seen users manage to successfully extract the SQLite database file from an iTunes backup but to the best of my knowledge it isn't possible to interact with the iCloud backup in the same way. With the infected iCloud backup restored you could use Ben & brenty's suggesting of extracting a backup using Creating and restoring 1Password backups in iTunes (iOS) or you could try setting up iCloud Sync as that would only store a copy of the vault in iCloud Drive (using CloudKit) and nothing else. Then you could wipe the iOS device and have 1Password find the vault in either iCloud or via the restored backup.
