using iMac, iPhone and iPad. Vault issue on iPhone4
Hi,
1: I find 1Password very useful. Thanks.
2: I have a vault issue: My iMac and iPad use latest 1Password 5 versions. But my macBook and iPhone 4 seems to be restricted to an older version as they can't run (macbook) 10.9.0 or (phone) iOS8. I use Dropbox to sync on all those devices, which works quite well, but on the iPhone it keeps reverting to a vault called "Primary" which is older than the vault on there named "1Password".
When using the phone, I occasionally forget that, every time, I have to go to settings and switch vaults, this means I often end up trying out of date passwords.
On the phone, the vault named "1Password" is up to date and set to sync, so I presume that's the Dropbox one. If I update an entry on my iMac, the "1Password" vault on the iPhone also gets updated.
I can't see a way to make the vault named "1Password" the default on my phone.
Confusingly, if I look at 1Password on my iMac that vault is called "Primary"!
On the iPhone, I see that the vault named "1Password" (that's the one that's syncing with Dropbox) has an option to remove, if I click on the "i" button next to the name. But the "Primary" vault on the phone does not.
How can I fix this safely so I just have one vault across devices please?
thanks lots
neil

Hi, my iPhone 4 was misbehaving so I had to reset, when the apps were put back on from backup as part of that process 1Password wasn't loaded. I guess this is because the latest 1Password app is not compatible with my iPhone 4 with iOS 7.
I also sync an iPad with iOS 8 on the mac, so i guess iTunes on the mac has 1Password 5 in "Apps".
Is there any way to ensure this does not happen again? I'd not noticed 1Password had disappeared and found myself having to download it whilst out as I needed a password at the time.
thanks

Hi @neilB,
I'm sorry to hear about the trouble that you've been having with 1Password! Are you making use of 1Password's Multiple Vaults feature at all? It sounds to me like you may have set up 1Password on your iOS device with an empty vault, and then added your actual vault as a secondary (which would explain why you're having to switch back and forth.)
I can't see a way to make the vault named "1Password" the default on my phone.
At this time, there is no way to switch the 'default' vault in 1Password 5 for iOS. The vault that 1Password will always unlock to is the first vault that is installed on your device.
Confusingly, if I look at 1Password on my iMac that vault is called "Primary"!
I can certainly see where this is getting a little bit confusing. When everything goes right, the primary vault on your Mac should also be the primary vault on your iOS device.
On the iPhone, I see that the vault named "1Password" (that's the one that's syncing with Dropbox) has an option to remove, if I click on the "i" button next to the name. But the "Primary" vault on the phone does not.
To remove the primary vault, you would need to essentially reset 1Password for iOS. (Which it sounds like you've already done!) I hope you never need these steps again, but I'll explain the trick anyway, just in case. After clearing the existing data from 1Password for iOS, it's important to set up as an existing user, rather than creating a new vault. When you select the 'existing user' option, it will give you the opportunity to point 1Password at that existing vault stored in Dropbox, and it will make that vault the 'primary'.
Does this explain a bit about where things got tangled up?
If you have any further questions, please let us know - we're happy to help!

Hi
thanks for your email
bit more help needed, sorryjust so I get this right and I don't accidentally sync an empty vault with the one on dropbox and my mac it would be great to get step by step please
you write:

I don't think so, although 1Password did disappear in a phone reset and only come back when I re-downloaded from Appstore. Both vaults were there already when I did that. No users created etc.
(I did send another support request about the iOS 7 'reset' and "re-sync apps" from iTunes does not restore apps which are not supported in iOS 7!).I hope you never need these steps again,
hmm, looks like I do
but I'll explain the trick anyway, just in case. After clearing the existing data from 1Password for iOS,
OK, thanks, how do I do 1: the "reset 1Password for iOS" please
then how do I do 2: "clearing the existing data from 1Password for iOS" without risking at all contaminating the dropbox copy on my phone?it's important to set up as an existing user, rather than creating a new vault.
OK, so I see that will be an option.
When you select the 'existing user' option, it will give you the opportunity to point 1Password at that existing vault stored in Dropbox, and it will make that vault the 'primary'.
right, sounds like the right idea.
Does this explain a bit about where things got tangled up?
well not really, I don't recall making a new user or new vault - maybe this is a mixing 1Password 4 and 1P 5 thing?
my phone's always been like this I think! anyway once i know how to fix lets forget how it occurred! If you have any further questions, please let us know - we're happy to help!
thanks, see inline above ;-)

Hi Neil ( @neilB ),
First of all, I just wanted to let you know that we've removed your contact details, and I've re-formatted your post so it's a little bit easier to determine what parts are the quoted text and what parts are your responses.
To remove the primary vault, you would need to essentially reset 1Password for iOS. (Which it sounds like you've already done!)
I don't think so, although 1Password did disappear in a phone reset and only come back when I re-downloaded from Appstore.
Reinstalling the app is one way to reset 1Password for iOS. You can also remove the data from 1Password in Settings > Advanced > Erase Data and Settings. Before doing this though, it's important to ensure that you have your data saved elsewhere (whether this is in Dropbox or on another computer or device.)
2: "clearing the existing data from 1Password for iOS" without risking at _all_ contaminating the dropbox copy on my phone?
The steps I describe will remove the local copy of your 1Password data (that is, the copy of the data that is stored on your device). Removing the local data will have no effect on the data stored in the cloud (Dropbox).
well not really, I don't recall making a new user or new vault - maybe this is a mixing 1Password 4 and 1P 5 thing?
Multiple vaults were supported in both 1Password 4 and 1Password 5 for iOS, so we shouldn't be seeing any incompatibility issues there. In my experience, what you described sounds very much like 1Password was set up as a new user, and then the existing vault in Dropbox was added as a secondary vault. But you're right, let's just get things back to the way you'd like them to be and not worry too much about the mess itself. :)
just so I get this right and I don't accidentally sync an empty vault with the one on dropbox and my mac it would be great to get step by step please
Can you please confirm the current state of your iOS app? From your initial posts, it sounded like after reinstalling iOS you were able to get just your correct vault loaded, and that you were just looking to avoid this in the future. Do you still need instructions on how to configure 1Password for iOS?

Hi
thanks for helping.
I'd not spotted your reply 'til now.
I was wondering what to do!Currently the Mac is fine, so it the iPad, they both use Dropbox. The iPhone 4 has, as I explained, 2 vaults and I've no idea why.
Anyhow, the one called "Primary" is currently not set to sync and is a bit out of date, like a year out of date.I had to reset the iPhone not long ago [before this 1Password anomaly occurred] and, as you know, the reset means all the apps get installed again. But 1Password (and some others) didn't, I got a message that it could not be as the current version is not compatible with the old iOS of the iPhone 4. I got 1P' from the Appstore which offered me the old version.
OK
The vault that does sync and work right is called "1Password".
Unfortunately every time I open the application the "Primary" vault is selected by default. I can't delete that one, the option is not offered. And I can't see how to make the one called called "1Password" be the default.I only want (need) one vault on all my machines and would love a way to get back to this situation. I never added any vaults manually.
Ideally we can make it so the iPhone 4 will use Dropbox sync as it does now - but with just a single vault, so I don't get old passwords all the time when 1P' defaults to the wrong one.
Is that what you wanted to know?
Please tell me how to deal with this on my phone so that I am not risking the information in the vault on my mac or iPad. I was worried about deleting on the phone - as the info is shared via Dropbox I feared I might accidentally delete the lot. I've been bitten by Apple's apps like this before. And to lose my 1Password info would be catastrophic as I have a LOT of passwords stored.
If it's as simple as deleting and reinstalling 1Password on the phone and installing anew, great. more than that I ideally need a step by step explanation please.
thanks so much
neil

Hi @neilB,
As long as the 1Password vault is up to date on all of your devices and the Primary vault that you want to get rid of contains nothing of importance then you're correct, you can delete the re-install 1Password for iOS. When you start it up you will want to go through the steps that you're an existing 1Password user and that your vault is in Dropbox. When you select the 1Password.agilekeychain it will create a new Primary vault and it will be linked to your Agile Keychain going forward.
The deletion of 1Password anywhere won't ever touch your data in Dropbox. You specifically have to ask 1Password to delete it if you want that to happen or delete it manually. Even if you deleted the Agile Keychain from Dropbox it would merely mean your devices stop synchronising, it wouldn't delete the local copy of the vaults anywhere. So your other devices will remain quite safe and as you will be setting up a new device all it will do is pull down a copy of your vault in the initial steps and then synchronise changes as you would expect.
If you have any concerns at all please do let us know but you should be good to go

Hi
Thanks so much
That worked
Just a bit of feedback:
I was working on an iPhone 4.
You might like to have a look at the instructions (tips) when first starting 1Password as an existing user for selecting a vault in dropbox - there is a list of vaults available from Dropbox at that stage.
The inbuilt 1Password tip tells me to look at settings on another device to see which vault is being used - but looking to my iPad's 1Password settings didn't show that. Sync just showed "Dropbox". Maybe I needed to look in "vaults" in settings, I saw "Primary" there on the iPad - but that wasn't the name listed from Dropbox in that list of options - anyhow
It turned out I only had one vault listed as available from Dropbox, it was just a little confusing as the name was written over 3 lines on the iPhone.
So, I threw caution to the wind clicked there on that name and it worked.
So I am all good now.
Thanks for helpingNo idea how the isse ue happened, but, hey, its fixed!
Have a good week
Neil
