iPad Air not automatically syncing with MacBook Pro on wifi

I set up 1password on my MacBook Pro (OS X Yosemite 10.10.5). I synced it using wifi onto both my iphone 6 and my iPad Air (ios 8.4.1). Since then, the iphone 6 syncs automatically, but the iPad does not. I've checked to be sure that 1password is open, and that they are on the same wifi network. I've restarted everything and done another manual sync, but it still won't sync automatically. Any ideas? Thanks!

1Password Version: 5.3.2
Extension Version: Not Provided
OS Version: ios 8.4.1
Sync Type: wifi

Wifi sync only works between one Mac as server and one or more iOS devices as clients. It won't sync between two Macs. You could use Dropbox sync to get all of them talking to each other though. Or if you are avoiding a cloud solution, you could use Wifi sync between one Mac and the iOS devices and Folder sync between the two Macs.

Stare here to read about syncing options.

Thank you for the response, but I am not trying to sync between two Macs. As I stated in my original question, I am trying to synch from one MacBook Pro to two iOS devices: the iPhone 6 and the iPad Air. It syncs automatically via wifi to the iPhone 6, but it only will sync manually (using the 1password temporary password) and not automatically to the iPad Air. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but I am not trying to sync between two Macs, per your response. Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

It syncs automatically via wifi to the iPhone 6, but it only will sync manually (using the 1password temporary password) and not automatically to the iPad Air.

@kolotka: Can you tell me what "temporary password" you're referring to?

It sounds like everything is working for you between the Mac and iPhone. Is that correct?

It appears that you're using 1Password 5.3.2 for Mac on OS X 10.10.5, but it isn't clear which version of 1Password for iOS you're using on iOS 8.4.1. Please do the following:

    1. On the iPad, go to 1Password Settings > Sync > Sync Service > Disable Sync
    2. Restart your iPad and Mac
    3. On the iPad, go to 1Password Settings > Sync and set up Wi-Fi sync again

If it works, great! Just keep in mind that 1Password has to be unlocked on your computer for Wi-Fi Sync to work when you open 1Password on your iOS devices.

But if you're still having trouble, the best thing to do would be to generate a diagnostic report in 1Password Settings > Advanced > Diagnostics (under Log Settings enable Wi-Fi Sync) > Send Diagnostics (you’ll have to scroll to the bottom) and send it to support+forums at agilebits dot com so we can look at the logs to determine exactly what is happening. Just be sure to include a link to this forum thread and your username in the email so we can 'connect the dots'. We will get to the bottom of this! :)

Thanks for the response. Sorry -- "temporary password" wasn't the best term to use. I just meant that when I follow the agilebits process for syncing via wifi from the MacBook to iOS, there is that secret code that gets generated before syncing; so I can make them sync when going through this initial wifi syncing process listed on your website, but then it does not automatically sync to the iPad after that.

Yes, everything automatically syncs to the iPhone 6 with no problem.

It looks like the version of 1password on the iPad is 5.4.3.

I tried to follow your directions for disabling sync on the iPad, but when I go to 1password Settings > Sync, I do not have an option for Sync Service. I only see Primary Vault / Start Syncing and Items.

And yes, 1password has been unlocked on all devices when syncing; it goes to the iPhone without a problem.

Do you have another way for me to try to disable sync, per above, or do you want me to go ahead and send the diagnostics also mentioned in your response?

    Thanks!

@kolotka: Ah, yes! The secret! I didn't think of that since it is definitely not temporary (it will only change if you right click it and tell 1Password for Mac to generate a new one).

I tried to follow your directions for disabling sync on the iPad, but when I go to 1password Settings > Sync, I do not have an option for Sync Service. I only see Primary Vault / Start Syncing and Items.

This means that sync is already disabled, which would explain why it isn't working. But you seem to believe that it is enabled. Can you tell me what gives you this impression? It may be that the app is simply damaged, and that it will be necessary to reinstall it, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it (and only after backing up!). otherwise, send those diagnostics.

However, if you are, in fact, able to sync manually even with sync disabled already, then we will have to go that route. Please do the following:

    1. Backup your 1Password for iOS data
    2. Delete 1Password for iOS
    3. Reinstall it from the App Store
    4. Set up Wi-Fi Sync during the initial setup in the app
    5. Verify that sync now works as expected

Please let me know how it turns out. I look forward to hearing back from you! :)

Apologies for misreading your original post, @kolotka. I read MacBook Air, not iPad Air. My mistake. I'm gland @brenty was able to get the discussion back on track.

Hawkmoth -- No problem; thanks for responding.

Brenty -- In regard to why I would think the iPad is enabled.... When I did the first manual wifi syncing for both the iPhone 6 and the iPad Air, I just followed the directions on your website. Since then, the iPhone 6 has automatically updated without me doing anything else to it. I assumed the iPad Air would do the same. Right now, when I go to 1password Settings on the iPad Air, there is an option for Start Syncing; I didn't realize that there should be other options in Settings for me to know that it is enabled, since I hadn't had to do anything to the iPhone 6 to get it to back up automatically.

Is there something simple that enables it? If not, I'm not clear on whether you want me to send the diagnostics first or do steps 1-5 above first.

If you need me to do the reinstall, I have a question regarding the backup. Will all of my data stay on my MacBook Pro and iPhone 6 if I delete and reinstall 1password on the iPad Air? If so, do I need to go through the backup process for 1password on the iPad Air if my ultimate goal is just to get the current info on my MacBook Pro synced to the iPad Air after we reinstall? Thanks!

    Hi @kolotka ,

Before we go about reinstalling the app, let's just try setting up Wi-Fi sync one more time (since I can't see if we've tried that already). We've got an article in our User Guide to walk you through the process: Set up Wi-Fi Sync.

If those steps do not work, then reinstalling might give things a kickstart.

Reinstalling 1Password on your iPad will not affect the data on your Mac or your iPhone. If your entire database is complete there, then you're good to go! We're cautious people here though, so we always recommend backups, just in case.

Setting up again didn't work, so I did the reinstall, and, so far, that seems to have fixed the problem. Automatic updates are now happening.

FYI, per Brenty's response above, I checked my iPhone 6 Settings to compare with the iPad Air Settings; the iPhone 6 also does not have a Sync Service > Disable Sync listing, and it has been working fine all along.

    Thanks for your assistance.

    Hi @kolotka,

I'm glad to hear that you're back up and running after the reinstall!

I hope that 1Password behaves perfectly for you from now on, but if you have any other questions or concerns, we're here for you! :)
