Mac, iPhone, and iPad
I purchased the Mac version of 1Password and quickly got the hang of getting it to do stuff that I want. I then installed the app on my iPad and iPhone and did the wifi sync and that seemed to work. But, when I go to my investment site on my Mac it fills the user name and password for the website. Bingo I'm in. Can I do that on my iPad and iPhone? Is there something else I need to buy? Do I have to open up 1Password and go through it instead of directly to an app or a website using a short cut? For example, instead of clicking on my bank app do I click on 1Password. Thanks in advance.

You don't need to buy anything else, but in the iOS version you do need to set up the extension for it to work, Instructions are here: Enable the extension. Once it's set up, you use the same Share icon that you use to set it up to access it for the web sites you want to access.
If this isn't what you're looking for, please ask more questions.

I enabled the extension on my iPhone. I don't know what you mean by "...use the same Share icon that you use to set up..." I do that and I get a screen that allows me to add a new log in. I just want to log into a banking app. I think I did a successful sync of 31 logins. Do I assume many banking apps don't support 1Password? Should I stop using the apps that are on my phone and start using the web site? Like BofA for example. I thought that 1P would have a folder of passwords and a way to launch the app inserting the password. Please forgive my novice questions but I am reading and trying different stuff trying to learn. Thanks

@genec123 - 1Password for iOS is limited to filling credential into apps to those that have incorporated some special code to allow 1Password to talk to them. Otherwise, Apple sandboxing prevents such crosstalk. Most banks (maybe no banks) have not done this, which means that to use 1Password, you'll need to copy the credentials from 1Password and paste them into the appropriate fields in the app. If you have the option to use a web browser for your bank, that probably will work with automatic filling of your credentials, but some banks even close off the option to paste in passwords.

Smart answer. Not the answer I was hoping for but I do like the way it works on my Mac.

So with the financial apps so prevalent on the iPhone and iPad I assume this renders 1Password on those platforms pretty much inert?

Not to my way of thinking. I still have long, random, impossible to remember passwords for the fiscal institution apps that I use. I use copy and paste for fill them into those, and I'm much better off than the alternative of a short, easy to remember, easy to guess passwords. And there are other apps that have added the 1Password extension.

Hi @genec123,
It's great to see that you've been getting some pretty great answers here from Hawkmoth already, but I just wanted to pop in and offer my two cents or so. :)

Believe me, I really wish that I could log into my bank's app using 1Password! Unfortunately, as Hawkmoth has mentioned, iOS has some pretty strict rules about how apps can interact with each other. The short answer is that they can't. At least not without specific permission. And that specific permission has been made a lot simpler in iOS 8 with the introduction of app extensions. The 1Password app extension can be added to any app to allow for simple sign-in. But this has to be implemented by the app developer, and a lot of apps (over 200 already!) have done so. If you think it would be useful to have the 1Password app extension in your bank's app, we would absolutely LOVE it if you'd send them a feature request. Our website shows them exactly how easy it is to implement: developer outreach page, and the more they hear from users like you, the more likely they are to consider this!
So with the financial apps so prevalent on the iPhone and iPad I assume this renders 1Password on those platforms pretty much inert?
Well, I certainly wouldn't say that the lack of the app extension renders 1Password inert. We've done what we can to ensure that it's a simple matter to copy your credentials from 1Password for easy pasting in the apps that have yet to add support for the app extension. You can mark your bank Logins as 'Favourites' so they're easily accessible when you open the app. Then, it's a simple matter to copy your password from the list view: simply swipe right to reveal a copy button. Your password will be stored on your clipboard so you can paste it into the bank's password field.
As Hawkmoth says, 1Password is still a great way to store your long and random passwords so that you don't have to remember or type them. And we're always working to make it even more convenient! :)

Thanks for all of the quick and professional feedback. Again please bear with me as I am new to iOS. So, I open my banking app. Now what do I do? Please be very specific. I clicked on Safari and tapped the share icon then 1Password but I don't see where to get my IDs and passwords. So how do I get them? Thanks again.

Hi @genec123 ,
My apologies for not being more clear earlier. Because our bank apps haven't added the 1Password app extension, we can ignore Safari and that Share sheet altogether. We'll work from the 1Password app. Here's my workflow for accessing my bank app.
- Open 1Password, and go to the Favourites screen
- Swipe right on my bank Login's title to reveal the 'Copy' button
- Tap to copy my password
- Open my banking app
- (I have the app set to remember my account number)
- Press in the password field to reveal the 'Paste' option
- Paste my password and tap to log in.
Does this make sense?

Thanks. That worked except I had to swipe along the password text box to copy the password (not the login title). But it worked! Thanks.
One difference is, I don't have my logins into favorites yet but I would think that shouldn't change how one copies the password. Will now work on making my logins favorites.

Hi @genec123 ,
Well its certainly not required that you use the 'Favourites', the same trick will work in the regular Logins list. I just find it simpler to have my few most used Logins (like that pesky bank one) in my Favourites list so I don't have to scroll through my whole list. :)
