I have purchased the Mac version of 1password - the free Apple app store version for the IOS devices - I'm using dropbox synce. Any reason to also purchase the agilebits IOS app version in conjunction with the Mac version so I can use ICloud sync? May sound like a silly question, but I'm not real savvy when it comes to this

1Password Version: 5.0.2
Extension Version: Not Provided
OS Version: ios 8.? osx 10.10.5
Sync Type: dropbox

I guess I'd turn the question back to you. There is no reason why you should change from Dropbox syncing to iCloud, and there may be good reasons not to do so. If you want to share vaults with anyone else or sync multiple vaults, you will need to use Dropbox, since iCloud doesn't support either. (Using multiple vaults on iOS will require that you use the in-app purchase to activate the more advanced Pro features. Those are on sale for half off right now, so it would be a good time to do that.)

Because your data are protected by end to end encryption and your strong master password, iCloud and Dropbox are equally secure. Security doesn't depend in any way on what cloud solution you choose.

So, the only reason to buy a second license from Apple for your Mac would be if iCloud is important enough to you to justify the added cost. But if you really want to move that direction, the Mac application is also on sale at 30% off, making now a good time to make the move.

There are some confusing things in your question. For one thing, there is only one version of 1Password for iOS, and that is sold only in the iTunes App Store. It has access to iCloud and Dropbox for syncing. The desktop application is sold two places: the AgileBits web store (no iCloud access) and the Mac App Store (can use iCloud or Dropbox).

Thank you for the explanation - the only paid version I have is the Mac version which only syncs to dropbox and I have the free ios app on my devices which also sync to only dropbox - I was considering going with the paid IOS to use ICloud on all devices and that is essentially what you answered, so again thank you

You can use iCloud from the free iOS version, but you would need the Mac App Store version on OS X to take advantage of that ability.

  • Also: I'd be curious to hear what would motivate you to switch from Dropbox to iCloud, if Dropbox is working?

    Thanks!

And thank you for the assistance, @hawkmoth! Excellent answers.

based on the answer I received I don't see a practical reason honestly, since the dropbox sync has been flawless. I was more curious than anything

  • Thanks for the feedback. :)
