Trouble syncing 1P between Mac and iPhone

I only have one iOS device. I have two Macs. It appears that I can only sync to iOS or iCloud, not both. All three devices are configured to sync via Wi-Fi. So I am concerned and confused why my iPhone claims it cannot find my Mac#2 but my mac#2 claims it synced two minutes ago while my iPhone claims it synced five days ago. What did Mac#2 sync with?

Hm, now my iphone claims it synced 3 seconds ago but mac2 claims it last synced 5 minutes ago. So it appears the Mac is reporting when it last synced to a folder and does not indicate when it last synced with the iPhone. Is that right?

Since 1P on the iPhone can only sync with one configured Mac, it would be nice if the error message about not finding a syncable Mac reported the name of the Mac not found. I switch between two Macs once every 3 to 5 months, yeah long story, just long enough to forget about the steps necessary for configuring the Wi-Fi sync for 1P.

  • Greetings @over-specd,

There are potential sync issues that might arise from switching using your iOS device as a sync bridge between the two Macs. What we would actually recommend is using a pen/flash drive and Folder Sync to keep the two Macs synchronised. Due to a variety of technical reasons a removable drive is a lot more reliable than trying to use a network share or an iOS as the bridge.

Now good error reporting is always a positive thing but oddly it might be a harder sell than normal. As Wi-Fi sync was never designed to allow an iOS to jump between Macs the developers may be reluctant to add anything that assists. Their interest is always the integrity of your data which is why we don't recommend this. For a while we acknowledged it was possible but as we've learnt from the developers what this unintended usage means we now do try to discourage where possible.

Could the use of a pen/flash drive be a possibility for syncing your two Macs? If it is then our page on Folder Sync page should help you get it set up. If you have any questions about Folder Sync please do ask or if you merely want to respond to anything else I've written we look forward to reading that too
