How do I physically access my passwords from a website or piece of software on my phone?

Using 1Password on an iPhone is very different from accessing it on a computer. I can't seem to make the jump. Yes, I've watched the videos and am still clueless about actually accessing a login/password when it's called for. Once I am in software or at a website where I need to insert a password, I don't see any icon to click on (like I'm used to on the computer version). How do I actually get to the place where it will insert the correct login and password? (I know exactly where to go to get the extension version on my computer. Not a clue on the iPhone. But I think it is the latest version.) Please help. I love 1Password and am so frustrated I can't figure out how to use it on my iPhone!

  • Hi @drlcphd,

Thanks for taking the time to write to us with this question. I'd be happy to point you in the right direction.

As for websites, you have a couple of options. You can use 1Password's built-in web browser:
    https://support.1password.com/guides/ios/1browser.html

    Or you can use Safari:
    https://support.1password.com/guides/ios/extension.html

I personally find it very convenient to work with 1Password from within Safari.

As for 3rd party apps... They have to add support for 1Password before we can fill into them. This is a requirement of iOS. You can read a little more about this here:
    https://blog.agilebits.com/1password-apps/

I hope that helps. Should you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

    Thanks!

    Ben

Hi Ben and thanks for trying to help. My question is even more basic. Here's the problem....I'm on my phone in an app that requires a password. I'm looking at the blanks for login and password....NOW what do I do or where do I go next. On my computer I just click on the little 1Password icon and my login info fills in. But I see nothing to click on when I'm on my phone. That is where I'm stuck. How do I get from the blanks to be filled in to the info stored in 1Password? Example: I just opened my Google account on Safari on my phone....It asks for my email and password, which is stored in 1Password. So how do I fetch it? You can't possibly mean that I have to add support for 1Password for the hundreds of websites I have stored???

  • @drlcphd,

There is an important distinction between apps and websites.

On iOS apps explicitly have to have support for 1Password in order for you to fill your credentials into them. On Mac, there is no filling into applications other than web browsers (Safari, Chrome, etc). The page I linked above ( https://blog.agilebits.com/1password-apps/ ) shows the apps that we are aware of that have added 1Password support. Within those apps, when they ask you for a username/password, you'll also see a key hole icon. Clicking on that will open up the 1Password extension, which will allow you to fill your credentials. If an app you're using has not added 1Password support, then you'd need to copy & paste your credentials from 1Password into the app.

For web pages, you need to enable the Safari extension. Instructions for that can be found here:
    https://support.1password.com/guides/ios/extension.html
(click on the right arrow button at the bottom of the page to proceed to the next page)

Alternatively, you can use the web browser built-in to 1Password, called 1Browser. You can read about how to use that here:
    https://support.1password.com/guides/ios/1browser.html

    Thanks.

    Ben
