Accidental Merge of Secondary Vault on iOS with Primary Vault

We've been using 1P on home iMac just fine, for storing all our family passwords. We sync these via Dropbox on our (Mums/Dads) iPhones and iPads. All working nice.

We've also been strong our children' passwords for them as they access more stuff online. The introduction of additional vaults offered me a solution to a headache, whereby the children are constantly pestering me for their passwords!

So I set up an additional vault for each child whilst on 1PW on iMac, then copied or moved various entries into the additional vaults, relevant to each child. All good still.

I then installed 1PW on each child's iPhone and iPad. Set them all up fine by hooking each one up, via dropbox sync, to their new respective secondary vaults.

Apart from one child's iPhone..... Doh! When attempting to connect/sync with the relevant secondary vault, It looks like I accidentally hooked it up to the primary vault or something. So my son's secondary vault is also now populated with all the same entries as the primary vault. This is not good as the primary contains quite a lot of detail I'd rather he doesn't see.

Is there any way you can wind back a vault to it's previous state - a la Time Machine? Or do I have to manually wipe his vault and do the process again?

1Password Version: 5.3
Extension Version: 4.4.3
OS Version: 10.10.4
Sync Type: Dropbox

It's OK folks. I wasn't aware of the 'restore from backup' feature, but I am now.

I backed up the Mac 1PW as it was right now (just in case). I then reverted to the last state before the cock-up happened. Easy to tell as the number of items jumped by couple of hundred!

That brought back the last correct state of primary and two secondary vaults. I then deleted all entries from my sons secondary vault and repopulated it with the relevant items that I want him to see.

One thing I would say that it is slightly confusing when working with additional vaults is this. On the iOS device, when you are prompted to sync with a vault, the field label is 'PRIMARY VAULT' - even though I want to sync to an additional/secondary vault. I think this is where and why I made the initial mistake.

Maybe you could have the field label say 'WHICH VAULT?'

  • Hi @dozza,

Glad to hear having backups helped!

the field label is 'PRIMARY VAULT' - even though I want to sync to an additional/secondary vault.

I'm not seeing that. Could you please describe for me how you got to the screen with that label?

    Thanks!

    Ben

On iOS, when I'm setting up for children:

    Settings>Vaults>CHOOSE A VAULT

I'm then offered 'Primary' - I appreciate it's asking that i choose which vault I want to be Primary, but because I always refer to the Master/Main vault as Primary, I was wary of choosing this option. One isn't aware that after pressing it, we can choose from the 'real' primary, or either of the secondary vaults.

Can't you just list the three vaults (primary and two secondary) in a list on that (Settings>Vaults>CHOOSE A VAULT) screen?

@dozza: Indeed. That may be something we do in the future since so many people are finding new and unusual ways to use multiple vaults, but for now this is how it is designed to work.

The primary vault is simply the first vault created/added to 1Password on a given device. Your devices don't know anything about each other, as each can be used completely independent of the others. Syncing isn't the default way to use 1Password; rather, it's just another option that we offer that some people choose to use, but no one has to.

We can't list vaults or give them designations when they don't yet exist on the device. There is no 'real primary', as it depends entirely how you set it up on each particular device. For instance, you probably don't want your primary vault to be the primary vault on your childrens' devices. ;)

"you probably don't want your primary vault to be the primary vault on your childrens' devices."

Absolutely - that's the whole point of what I was trying to, and now have, achieved.

I love 1Password and recommend it to everyone who expresses grief/woe/stress with regard to password overload!
