Bank verification for online purchases

Hi all.

I'm not sure if banks in other countries adopt this system, but in the UK, if I make an online purchase, after completing checkout and hit the 'pay' button, I am then redirected to an 'authentication' page which is a blank white page with my bank's logo and 'authentication box'. Here I am supposed to enter random letters and or numbers chosen by my bank, to prove its me buying, I then get redirected back to the (purchasing) site to complete the sale.

My question is this: the banks authentication page wants random digits taken from a password, say my password was 'letmebuy123' it wants me to input three characters into three individual small boxes which have been pre-defined/generated at that time. Is there a way I can create a 'authentication login' or something similar whereby I enter my complete password, and where each character for my password is numbered. For example, I may be asked for characters One, Three, eight. So, using the fake password above One would be 'l' three would be 't' and eight would be 'y' so can I store a long password where each character is numbered?

The only way I thought, which seems a bit difficult, is to create a login called say 'Bank Authorisation' (or whatever) then 'add a new section' in my iOS 1password and name each section numerically with the corresponding password character. So as an example, my first new section would be called 'One' and the text below would be 'l' (from the example password above) this would be a lot of work, and ultimately, I would still need to copy and paste as 1password wouldn't know what the three little boxes represent and what letter goes where.

I know you're probably thinking how hard is it to remember three random digits, but when your password is nearly twice the length of the alphabet and I am asked for character 3, 19, 38 I tend to run out of fingers to count on!

I'm sorry I've rambled on a bit and repeated myself in places but I wanted to try and get my query across for someone to understand!

    Hi @EAPTCB,

Thanks for taking the time to write in.

The only way 1Password would be able to hand this is if the data you need to input is the same each time. Also: for what it is worth, you may want to evaluate the security implications of this type of system. Essentially they may be storing your password in plain text in order to be able to do something like that.

No worries. I understood exactly! Better to have more details than not enough.

@bwoodruff - Thanks Ben, I suppose I'll have to find a different method. The U.K. banks have been using this system successfully for years, the page you enter the password characters is not only highly encrypted but authenticated by the 'Verified by Visa' scheme. All the best, Andy.
