After upgrading to 10.11 (El Capitan), 1Password no longer starts: fails to connect 1Password Mini
Yes, I have followed all the advice on the forums. I found and deleted every single file with "1Pass" "1pass" "agilebits" "Agilebits" on my entire system. Every single file, including old preferences, plists, browser extensions, etc. I cleared my trash can. I had no 1Password apps installed.
I then rebooted, downloaded and installed 1Password 5.3.2. Tried starting it and get the same error: 1Password failed to connect to 1Password mini
I tried this 4 times now. Checking my system.log file, I can see these relevant messages:
Oct 1 13:40:22 0x6D746873 com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword4-helper[1080]): Could not find and/or execute program specified by service: 155: Refusing to execute/trust quarantined program/file: 2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword4-helper
Oct 1 13:55:05 0x6D746873 com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword4-helper[1808]): Could not find and/or execute program specified by service: 155: Refusing to execute/trust quarantined program/file: 2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword4-helper
Oct 1 13:55:05 0x6D746873 com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword4-helper): Service only ran for 0 seconds. Pushing respawn out by 10 seconds.
I'ts clear that something is preventing onepassword4-helper from launching. Any ideas? I also ran a Diagnostics Report which you can access here: AgileBits Update: link removed; please do not post Diagnostic Report links or data on the forum
Thanks!
Blake

I upgraded to 10.11 today and have spent 2 hours trying to get 1Password to work again. It currently does not work and I have an open issue you can see here: https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/48853/after-upgrading-to-10-11-el-capitan-1password-no-longer-starts-fails-to-connect-1password-mini?new=1
I would wait to update to El Capitan unless you don't need your passwords. I currently am locked out of my passwords.

Still no resolution to this, I keep trying to clean and reinstall without any luck. Currently am locked out of all my passwords.

@littlebobbytables 's solution worked for me.

This solution worked for me:
- Ensure you only have a single copy of 1Password on your Mac, you will want it to reside in /Applications/.
- Use the following command in a Terminal window. The command is
xattr -d -r -s com.apple.quarantine /Applications/1Password\ 5.app

Yep, that's correct. Thanks.

Thanks for letting us know that
xattr
command worked for you, Blake. If you have any other trouble with 1Password please give a shout and we'll help you out. :)0 -
The
xattr
command worked for me as well. I was upgrading from v3 to v5 on El Capitan 10.11.1.0 -
Thanks for confirming the solution, @kylemgreen. Sorry you ran into this El Capitan bug, but it's great news that things are working well for you now!
If we can be of further assistance, please let us know. We are always here to help.

I have the same problem but removal, restart and xattr not helping. Additionally, I uninstalled with clean my mac uninstaller and cleaned out the application support folder for 1password and 1password4 in application support.

We do not recommend using CleanMyMac or other "uninstaller" utilities. They can be a bit overzealous in their cleaning and remove very useful files — including your 1Password data. Please be very careful, and you might want to check your trash to make sure your data hasn't been placed there by the utility.
In fact, your data is located in the exact folders you said you "cleaned out", so I am concerned for data loss. Please do not take any further action until we've had a chance to review a Diagnostics Report from you. You can create the a Diagnostics Report from your Mac like this:
https://support.1password.com/diagnostics/mac.html
Attach the Diagnostics Report to an email message addressed to support+forum@agilebits.com.
Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.
You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here so we can track down the report and ensure that it is dealt with quickly. :)
Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks very much!
