I purchased 1Password 2 years ago and never used it. Now I can't remember my Master password.

This was on my old iPhone 4S or 5. I THOUGHT I knew what the password was -- it even matches my hint -- but it's not working. How do I start over?

If you just delete the application from an iOS device, it will also delete all the data. You can then download it again from the iTunes App Store using the same Apple ID you used to get it originally, and open it. It will then behave like a new installation and you can begin anew. You'll be asked if you have ever used !Password before or if you are a previous user. Answer that you are a new user.

Now some cautions. Be sure you understand what I said about deleting all your data. You won't have access to it again. But if you have truly forgotten the master password, that will be the case anyway. There is no way to open your data without that master password. Also, it would be good to know if you ever synced your data to another location, perhaps Dropbox or iCloud. If you have done that, it may complicate things a little. You would still need that master password for those stored data, if you say that you are a previous user, so, again, if you are sure that master password is no longer available to you, answer that you are a new user when you start up the fresh copy.

I say all that out of cautiousness. I actually assume that if you haven't used the application for a couple of years, there isn't any valuable data stored in the first place.

You haven't said what version of 1Password you have installed, but the current version for iOS 9 is 6.0.1. If you happen to be running a version older than version 4 now, there have been some changes in how it is priced.

  • Hi @QueenSherwood,

Hopefully hawkmoth's post above proves helpful. If there is anything else we can do, please don't hesitate to contact us.
