Sync via Wifi and Dropbox parallel

Hi. I want to sync Primary wallet via Dropbox and Secure wallet via Wifi only. Seems i cannot do this simply. In order to sync the secure wallet via wifi i need to entirely switch 1password sync to Wifi (even on the primary) and then and only then secure wallet becomes available for sync via wifi.
Until i don't switch primary wallet to wifi sync, secure wallet doesn't have an option for wifi sync, only for Dropbox.
Can i somehow use above setup? Sync Primary via Dropbox and Secure via Wifi?
I'm very disappointed, because that would be the whole point of seperating the wallets (secure and primary), to user difference sync methods for security reasons.
Actually this is why i bought 1password, but seems i cannot do this :((((((
Thanks for ideas.

  • Hi @dembala,

Thanks for taking the time to write to us. WiFi sync must sync the "primary" vault. To accomplish what you're describing you'd need to reverse your vaults. E.x. The items in your "Secure" vault would need to be moved to the "Primary" vault and the items in the "Primary" vault would need to be moved to the "Secure" vault. Then you can sync the Primary vault via WiFi and the Secure vault via Dropbox.

    Thanks.

    Hi,
Thanks for the solution. It really works. Strange limitation though... Same like the inablity to rename the primary vault to sg else. Would see it in the future. Thanks for now! Cheers.

  • Glad to hear that worked for you. Sorry the current solution is a bit convoluted. Hopefully something we can improve in the future.

    Thanks.

I'm a bit surprised that the actual data that is stored on Dropbox is not packaged into a single data file and encrypted but the individual web site data are stored as files and they are human readable. The passwords are encrypted there but you can see the actual website addresses there in those files. Even the password hint is stored in clear text in a file there. This is quite frustrating. We know that none of any cloud not even Dropbox can be considered 100% secure against attacks. We all remember, right?

I would recommend to put the entire database into one encrypted file and not store the password hint in clear text either.

  • @dembala,

You can read about that here:
    https://support.1password.com/agile-keychain-design/

We've actually developed a newer keychain format (called OPVault) that you can read about here:
    https://support.1password.com/opvault-overview/

And you can read about switching to OPVault here:
    https://support.1password.com/switch-to-opvault/

Please note that OPVault is not backwards compatible.

    Thanks!

Please explain what you mean by "not backwards compatible".
I found this, quoted below, on the website you mentioned.
I'm puzzled. If i can just switch back any time, it's backward compatible, isn't it?
Thanks for your great support !

    "Switching back to Agile Keychain

If for any reason you need to switch back to using the Agile Keychain format for Dropbox and Folder Sync, simply perform the above steps with false at the end of the Terminal command instead of true. As before, you will need to go through the same process for converting any vaults you are already syncing.
    "

  • @dembala,

You can certainly switch back and forth between OPVault and Agile Keychain. What I mean by "not backwards compatible" is that it will not work with older versions of 1Password, which only supported Agile Keychain (not OPVault).

    Thanks!

    Hi,
Successfully migrated to opvault. Was very easy with the help of the description on the above mentioned page.
One file, clean folder. Feels more secure to me :)
Sync works also perfect now with the two different sync methods at once.
Thanks a lot for your attention, thumbs up for the support.
    Cheers.

    Ben,
I noticed that after all this change you suggested, when 1password pops up the dialog when saving new passwords on sites, it offers the primary vault only as possible destination. As you suggested, i moved my "internet" passwords to the secondary vault and my "more secure stuff" to the primary in order to be able to sync the primary via wifi only and the secondary via Dropbox only. Seems that now i cannot save the new internet passwords in my secondary vault, only if editing it manually and moving it manually to the secondary vault after putting it to the primary. This is not hat good at all :(
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks!

  • Hi @dembala,

Is this 1Password for Mac that you are referring to? If so you can click on the 1Password icon on the left-hand side of the dialogue box to change vaults:

You can also change vaults from the extension button:

We are making changes in this area, that are available in current beta versions, to make this process more clear and easier.

I hope that helps. Should you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

    Thanks.

    Ben
