1Password passes your fingerprint to the iOS operating system, which returns a result to 1Password to indicate whether the fingerprint is recognized by the OS or not. Since the recognition is entirely up to iOS, there won't be a way for you to allow someone else to use a fingerprint to use your phone, but not to use the same fingerprint to open 1Password.

  • Hi @ggl,

As hawkmoth mentioned the fingerprint recognition is handled entirely by iOS, and as such it isn't possible for us to have a separate set of fingerprints than iOS itself does. iOS is really designed as a single-user operating system, and doesn't offer multi-user features such as this.

Your best bet would be to disable Touch ID in applications you don't want others to have access to, such as 1Password.

    Thanks.

    Ben

Thanks. Seems I can allow pin code access to the 6s for others not registering fingers. Then the 1pw fingerprint would open with mine only-correct? Can i use restrictions on the phone to block others from accessing the add a finger print to memory?

@ggl - Fingerprint recognition for 1Password won't work unless Touch ID is enabled for the phone too, so setting a PIN for the phone alone won't work; you won't be able to use fingerprint recognition at all. But you could turn off Touch ID and set a different PIN for 1Password from the one used to use the phone.

Also, if Touch ID is enabled on your phone, you won't be able to use a PIN for 1Password. If Touch ID is enabled, you can enable Touch ID for 1Password, but not a PIN. You can also leave Touch ID off for 1Password in that case, but then you'll need your mater password each time you want to use 1Password.

I may have misunderstood you, though. You could indeed register only your fingerprints for Touch ID. Other users would then be able to access the phone with the phone's PIN, and you'd still use your own fingerprints to open the phone and 1Password.

I am not aware of a way to lock Touch ID to prevent someone who has access to your phone from changing the registered fingerprints. That would be a security problem for 1Password in your case, if you were worried that someone using your phone would change the registered finger prints. If they did that, 1Password would accept the OS judgement about whether the fingerprints were authentic.

  • @ggl Did the info that hawkmoth posted help answer your question here? What he said is completely correct: Touch ID must be enabled on your device to use it with 1Password, and that requires a PIN to be active on your device. Additionally, if you have Touch ID enabled on your device and choose to use it with 1Password, you cannot use a PIN in 1Password as a fallback — you'll simply have to input your Master Password. Hopefully that helps clear things up! Let us know if you have any questions.
